On Monday I was walking to first period when I heard some people laughing and saying things like,
"So what part did you eat first?"
I turned the corner and found Shelley on the floor covering her face whimpering as a crowd of people, gathered around her laughing. The main one who'd spoken was the boy in the front saying cruel things to Shelley.
"Hey! Fuck off you assholes!"
I ran over to Shelley and they were about to start in on me when I heard another boy mutter,
"Oh god here comes Godfrey."
Then Roman looked at them with an intense stare,
"We dunno what's with her man, we tried talking to her but-"
Roman cut him off making intense eye contact.
"Kiss him."
There was a pause and the two boys at the front just looked at each other scared shitless. Then they quickly kissed and Roman told them to fuck off. He made sure Shelley was alright then gave me a confused almost annoyed look,
"Do you just ask to be bullied?"
Then was about to leave me sat on the floor beside Shelley but gave her a quick smile and ran his thumb over her cheek making a light blue glow appear. I was about to leave when Roman pulled me by my wrist and looked at me genuinely appreciatively for once and have a small smile,
"Thank you. Shelley doesn't really have friends."
I gave a small nervous smile, my stomach feeling strange but I ignored and gave a nod,
"I know the feeling."
Then Roman let go of me. But I was in shock and awe at how Shelley's skin had turned blue like that when Roman touched her.I stood up and held my hands out for Shelley which she grabbed as best she could through her bandages and stood up and we walked off together and finally, I'd made a new friend, whether she be another Godfrey or not it didn't matter. She was different to Roman and I think that'd be good for me. After school I asked if Shelley wanted to come round my house, nervous about her response.
"I'd love to but mother never lets me hang out after school."
She gave an apologetic look, then smiled, as she began typing on her phone again,
"How about you come round our house?"
I looked down feeling emotional suddenly.
"Um, I'm not sure that's such a good idea. I haven't been round there since I was seven and that's when me and Roman stopped being friends."
Now it was my turn to give her an apologetic look. Then mum pulled up and I waved bye to Shelley and mum grinned.
"Made a friend I see. Told you."
How did I not expect that comment. I kept my eyes out the window and zoned out thinking whether I'd ever go back to the Godfrey house again, especially if me and Shelley become close friends. The next day I found Shelley talking with Roman. Funny, whenever she was around his friends were no where to be seen. I plucked up the nerves to go over with a smile and didn't want to even glance at Roman knowing he'd blank me. Shelley noticed me and smiled back giving me a hug, to which I returned gratefully as it didn't happen a lot as usually I was afraid of touch but at the same time always wondered why no one would touch me. I'd been like it since dad went to jail after emotionally and physically abusing me for a few years until I finally told mum.
"Hey, about your offer yesterday, I thought about it, and I'd be going for you, so I'd love to come over if you'll still have me?"
I smiled nervously, not wanting her to think I was just asking myself round. She jumped up and down excitedly and clapped with a happy grin then hugged me again, making me flinch ever so slightly.
"Have I missed something?"
Roman intervened with an eyebrow raised. Damn, I said I wasn't going to look at him. I quickly waved to Shelley and power walked to my locker. Lunch came round and I joined the cue, hoping I'd see Shelley when I felt someone join the cue behind me, Roman. I faced ahead of me but felt his eyes on my back.
"Since when were you and Shelley so tight?"
He asked almost in jealousy. I turned slightly and replied with a gentle smile,
"Since it's about time we should."
Then turned back round feeling a little more comfortable.
"Yeah. Well Olivia's not gonna like it. That's if she even recognises you.."
He muttered the last part. I stayed with my back towards him a little hurt but just shrugged.Once I bought my juice I was about to leave when Roman patted the spare seat beside him, gesturing to me to sit at his large table of loud boys and several slutty looking girls with too much makeup and over the top laughs. I froze just looking at the table and the people around it and debated whether I should sit there or not. I slowly walked over and took the seat next to Roman nervously just looking down. I again felt Roman's green irises on me as I turned the bottle of juice round in my hand.
"That's all you have?"
He suddenly asked bluntly again. I glanced round a little to look at him briefly before replying quietly.
"Um, yeah. I don't really eat much at lunch."
"Much? More like nothing. You gotta eat."
He proceeded. His friends were still laughing amongst themselves till they noticed me more and kept looking at me. Roman slid $10 across to me but all I could do was look at it, a little confused. Then looked at Roman waiting for an explanation.
"For food. You should eat."
He gave a very small half smile, but I noticed and gave a quick grateful smile back.
"Thank you. You didn't have-"
I began,
"I know."
"Might put a little meat on her chest."
One of the girls started in on me, which made me more anxious as girls are way meaner to fight with and bitchier. The others started laughing apart from Roman who looked pissed.
"Shut the fuck up Stace."
He glowered at the girl who'd made the comment. They all looked at Roman shocked. The girl then shook it off and flicked her bleach blonde hair then huffed and strutted off dramatically.
"Um, I should go."
I quickly said getting up, Roman stood up too and quickly grabbed my wrist but not too hard. His eyes latched onto mine then he spoke but without expression.
"So you coming over tonight?"
I'd forgotten this morning, I guessed I still was.
"Oh, um, I guess. Shelley wanted me to."
I spoke feeling like I should avert my eyes from Roman's before they disintegrated from his intense stare.
He simply nodded then let go of my wrist and returned to his table where his friends didn't even notice. As I turned back briefly before exiting, I was surprised to see Roman's eyes on me but in an almost protective way and couldn't help but smile to myself as I walked out.
