"Will you lot get your acts together!" Bobby yelled up the stairs, cursing as his hand slipped on the banister and dragged the winding golden tinsel out of place. "Damn kids," he muttered to himself, a small smile tugging at his lips.
"Hey, you ready?" Jody checked, appearing at Bobby's side. She was dressed nicely in a fitting deep-purple top, with long sleeves that ruffled at the edges, and a pair of boot-cut jeans.
"I've been ready for an hour," Bobby smiled. "It's the kids who gonna make us late."
"Nah," Jody pulled a face. "I'm sure they'll be down any second. Besides, you know how it is."
Bobby turned to her, raising his eyebrows.
"Oh, come on, Singer. It's Christmas Day for God's sakes!"
Jody's smile was infectious. "I'll go start the car," Bobby announced, "You round up the idjits."
Jody did a mock-salute and hurried up the stairs.
~~
It had been officially Christmas Day for the grand total of eleven hours. As would be expected, the house hold had all risen early: though this was more out of habit than excitement. As far as Bobby was concerned, the Winchesters had never experienced a proper Christmas - at least not one they would have been old enough to remember. So, he'd deliberately tried to make it a big deal. It was an idea that had seemed reasonable at the time, but had quickly gotten out of hand.
Sam had asked if they could decorate the house. Bobby had said yes. The house was now almost unrecognisable.
It started in the hall way, where home-made multicoloured paper chains had been pinned to the ceiling, hanging down low enough to catch the tops of people's heads. On the stair case, golden tinsel had been wound carefully along the length of the banister and deposited clumps of glitter if anyone brushed past it. In the kitchen, candy canes had been hung in the most ridiculously places: from cabinet handles, on the backs of chairs, down the side of mugs and even, on one occasion, sticking out of a vase of Jody's flowers.
Then there was the living room.
Several candles had been placed near the fire, as well as a small statue of a donkey (the rest of the nativity scene had mysteriously gone missing after Benny and Elsa had made a failed attempt in assembling it). A Christmas tree had been placed in the corner of the room, it's large, untameable branches stretching outwards in all directions and littering the floor with pine needles. Baubles had been hung in excess across it and bright yellow lights had been strung all the way around it. Atop of the tree, an angel had been placed. When it was bought, it had been a sweet little ornament, wearing a soft white gown that matched its pale wings. Dean, however, had not agreed with this at all and, when no one else was looking, had put a scrap of light brown cloth around it and had coloured its hair in with black sharpie. He had called it 'mini Cas' and had point blank refused to allow anyone to remove it.
Bobby had hoped the madness would end there - but he had been wrong.
Several days after the Christmas tree had been put up, a single plastic reindeer had appeared on the driveway. From its glowing red nose, it was clearly supposed to be Rudolph. The reindeer in itself wasn't so bad. The problem was that no one could agree on where to put it. On at least two occasions, Bobby or Jody had nearly reversed over it in the evening. This had resulted in a run over hoof which Sam, Dean and Elsa had taken very seriously. From then on, Rudolph's hangouts had gotten progressively weirder. On one morning, he had been placed atop Jody's car. A different day, he'd been guarding the door. Several times he had been hidden in a hedge and once he had even ended up on the roof, at which point Bobby had taken him down and threatened to run him through the wood chipper if he moved again. The next day Rudolph had been in the driver's seat of Bobby's car. Now he was chained to the side of the house, Jody having convinced Bobby not to dispose of the creature.
