*tw: violence and mentions of blood*

The room erupted into chaos as shards of splintered glass fell from the window in a sudden, deadly shower.

There was an explosion of movement.

Without thinking, Dean launched himself forward and grabbed for Cas, swinging him away from the window and onto the ground. In the same instant, Gabriel and Sam ducked hastily under the desk: Elsa throwing herself down against the far wall.

There was a tinkling sound - almost musical - as each piece of glass hit the carpeted floor, most bouncing before coming to rest.

Further off, an uproar of shrieking began as birds suddenly became airborne - all desperate to get away from whatever was going on below.

The echo of gunfire faded.

And then there was silence.

And it was as if the world had stopped.

No one moved.  No one said a word.  No one even dared to breathe.

Slowly, Dean drew himself back from where he was crouched over Cas.  As he moved, he heard, rather than felt, pieces of stray glass fall from his back.  He was vaguely aware that it stung, and it was with great effort that he forced himself to regain his bearings.

Cas, still curled up beneath Dean, was shaking. His bare arms were clasped tightly over his head. He still hadn't moved.

"Here," Dean whispered, shaking the last of the glass from his flannel shirt, now ripped in multiple places, and placing it over Cas. "You okay, Angel?"

No answer.

"Cas?" Dean hissed, trying not to panic, "Are you hurt?"

He only received a shake of the head in response, but it was good enough.

Thank God.

Quickly pushing himself onto his feet, Dean looked about the rest of the room.

The window had shattered completely; almost no glass had been left in the frame and the curtains, still only half drawn, had been badly torn where the shards had sliced their way through the fabric. Still, they quivered as a cold breeze drifted into the exposed room.

"Sammy?" Dean called, still reluctant to raise his voice any louder than a harsh whisper. It just felt wrong. "Sammy? Els? Gabe?"

A small call of 'here' came from beneath the desk. Darting over, Dean tried to avoid kneeling in the glass as he craned his neck to see into the space.

Gabriel was huddled on the far side, his face completely drained of colour as he gripped Sam's hand tightly. On the other side of Sam, who was slightly further into the room that the others, was Elsa; Sam had pulled her away from the wall and into the shelter of the desk the second she'd been within reach. Crouched together, the three of them looked like startled rabbits caught in the headlights of the early morning sun.

"Everyone okay?" Dean's eyes were already skimming over them, scanning for any signs of injury.

Sam's left hand looked a little battered, blood trickling down the side of his knuckles where a spiked shard had sliced open the skin. Elsa had received a couple of small cuts across the cheek and Gabriel looked as though he'd fallen too hard on his arm and was likely to soon develop a bruise. Other than that, everyone appeared relatively unharmed.
