Somewhere Over The Rainbow

Sam Winchester had beaten his alarm by almost an hour and was genuinely shocked when it finally decided to go off.  Shifting himself along his bedroom floor, where he'd been nesting for the best part of his waking morning, he reached a hand out and silenced the device: the digits 7:00 still glowing enthusiastically long after the sound had diminished.

Reluctant to leave his newly-fashioned den, Sam lingered for a while.  His tall, well-kept frame appeared almost small in comparison to the collection of boxes that surrounded him, all stacked cautiously on top of one another, several teasing at teetering.  Lids of boxes had been removed here and there, as if at random.  Some of the exposed containers revealed tattered files and newspaper clippings, others held collections of dusted books and an isolated few hugged newly-polished weapons.

Sam sighed.

He'd convinced Bobby to retrieve them from the attic almost as soon as they'd come home from the hospital the previous week (thankfully, no further visits there had been required: Gabriel had been released the next morning) and, though he'd started sorting through them almost immediately, he still had a long way to go.

A Hunter's work is never done.

Pulling himself up, Sam made several calculated steps across the room before reaching his door.  A quick, final glance at the calendar showed the day's date circled in red ink.  Sam brushed his hair aside and smiled.  Today would be a good day.

"En what's dah?"

Jody rolled her eyes at the eldest Winchester who, despite her warnings, hadn't gotten a plate and was still proceeding to speak with his mouth full of crème doughnut, causing crumbs to gather at the corner of her documents.

"That," she stated, shaking the file free of crumbs and smoothing it shut, "Is official police business."

Dean swallowed.  "So?"

"So, it's officially none of yours," Jody finished.

Dean slumped back in his chair in a sulk, allowing it to swing briefly onto its back legs before clattering down on to the kitchen floor.  Strips of sunlight invaded the room, pouring in through the shuttered windows and spilling softly onto the table.

"Good thing we got that window fixed," Jody commented, throwing a glance in the direction of the living room.  "It's set to rain this afternoon."

"It's always set to rain," Bobby grumbled, a smile hidden beneath his battered baseball cap as he entered the kitchen.  Briefly, he paused to check the slightly skewered clock on the opposite wall: its longest hand was stretching leisurely towards the three.  "Right," Bobby nodded in Dean's direction, "I want you looking sharp and ready for school within the hour."  Bobby paused, watching as his eldest son got up from his chair.  "And Dean? You better not have been eating doughnuts for breakfast again."

"Of course not," Dean grinned, his charming smile only earning an eye-roll from his adoptive father, as well as an exasperated muttering of 'I ain't no fool.'

Still smirking to himself, Dean slipped out of the room and ascended the stairs, meeting Sam halfway up who, for the most part, was still looking both incredibly tired and sleep deprived.  Brushing past his brother with only a questioning raise of the eyebrows, Dean continued up the stairs and made his way into his room.
