The rest of the day dragged by at a painfully slow pace.
Dean and Michael were both forced to sit through a double of maths. Perhaps it wouldn't have been too bad, had the school not recently employed a new teacher: Mr. Anderson, who seemed to have no idea what he was doing.
"I can't believe we still have another hour," Dean groaned, staring at the clock mounted on the opposite wall.
"Don't you like maths?" Michael asked, feigning shock. "How else would you rather spend your time?"
"Oh, I don't know." Dean flicked a pencil lightly across his desk. It rolled forward and then stopped, having reached a slight incline in the wood, and tumbled back into his hand. "I was going to see if I could get access to the security tapes at the corner shop."
Michael raised an eyebrow. "And how would you do that?"
"Dude. The sheriff literally lives with us. It can't be that hard."
"Knowing you, you'd probably find a way to get the tapes regardless."
Dean grinned devilishly. "Of course I would."

By the time the last bell finally sounded, Sam had had just about enough of school. The very fact that he thought this seemed like an impossibility. But the truth was, he was exhausted. Every simple task demanded his energy and, in the end, he didn't have any left to give. To make matters worse, he'd already agreed to walk Gabriel home. Normally, that wouldn't be a problem; he'd be glad to spend extra time with his boyfriend. But now? He just wanted to go home.
"Samsquash?" Sam turned to see Gabriel staring up at him. "You okay?"
"Tired," he muttered, rubbing a hand across his face.
"Come on," Gabriel soothed, taking his hand. "My place isn't far. In fact, scrap that. Jade!" Sam jumped as Gabriel suddenly yelled out across the car park.
The blonde, who'd been walking some distance in front, turned. "Yeah?"
"Can we crash at yours?" Gabriel asked, dragging Sam over to where Jade was standing with Alfie and Elsa. "Sam's tired and your place is closer."
She shrugged. "Sure, it's whatever."
Faintly, Sam felt as though he should protest against this intrusion of someone else's privacy. He didn't. Instead, he allowed his mind to wander as Gabriel led him away from the school, following just behind the others.
"Your brother okay?" Jade asked, glancing back over her shoulder at the duo.
"Which of us are you talking to?" Alfie checked.
"Elsa," Jade rolled her eyes in her usual sarcastic manner. "Seriously, Sam looks like he's gonna collapse."
"He was fine this morning," Elsa mumbled, realising even as she said it that it wasn't true. Sam hadn't been fine. He'd be freaking out about John.
"Perhaps you should talk to him." Alfie squeezed Elsa's hand lightly as they walked. They'd already left the school behind them. The pavement seemed to be falling away under their feet as though it were only a temporary structure, existing solely to let them tread upon its surface. Either side of them, buildings were taking shape as they came further into the town. Up ahead, the body of the hospital stretched up from the ground, reaching gracefully for the darkening sky.
