twenty-One: Burned out

Sara's POV

I woke up to the smell of smoke. I quickly threw the covers off of me and rushed out of my room, Covering my nose. I went downstairs to check the smoke detectors, But the wires that hooked up to them were cut.

"Shit" I muttered underneath my breath."

I ran back up the staircase to my moms room.

"Mom!" I yelled. She wouldn't move, "Mom!!" I yelled once more, This time shaking her.

I put my finger underneath her nose. She wasn't breathing.

I looked out the door way and already saw the light from the flames starting to get closer and closer to the house.

"Mom please wake up!" I cried.

She wouldn't budge. I tried picking her up but it was no use, She was too heavy.

I started having a coughing attack from the smoke.

I pulled my moms arm and pulled her off the bed. When I did, she landed on the floor.

I dragged her out of the room down the stairs.

"Sorry mom" I said, with tears going down both my cheeks.

I finally reached the front door and peices of the top floor came down.

I tried to unlock the lock, But my finger kept slipping, It was getting hot making it more of a challenge, because the sweat from my forehead kept dripping.

The flames were catching up and coming near us. Every second the flames were 10 feet closer.

My fingers finally got a hold of the lock. I twisted it and fled out of the house with my unconscious mom. Just in time because if I would've waited another second a peice of wood would've came falling on my head.

I watched my house burn to the ground, A house that held so many memories. I then focused my attention on my mom.

I performed CPR on her multiple times, But nothing would work.

"Help!!!" I called out.

A next door neighbor, Mrs.Rodgers came rushing over.

"Darling what happened?" She asked while pulling out her phone.

I tried to talk but nothing but voice cracks and whining came out.

"Okay, okay honey calm down" she cooed.

After a while police cars, ambulances and fire trucks fled the street.

"Oh my god what happened!?" Grayson yelled while getting out of his Car.

"M-My mom!" I cried, while pointing at the stretcher she was on.

"Its going to be okay, Sara" he said, holding ne in his arms.

Behind him I saw Ethan, His eyes were felt with hurt and tiredness.

"Ma'am, we need to ask you a few questions" a police officer said.

I nodded in response.

"Did you burn down you're house?" He asked

"No!" I nearly shouted.

"Do you have any clue of who would've started this disaster"

As the word No was about to fall from my lips, The name Cassandra popped up into my mind.

"Cassandra" I said angrily.

"Thank you ma'am, we'll be in touch for any further questions" he said walking away, Into the crowd of a bunch of shocked neighbors.

"Now what do I do" I said, wiping my tears from my stained cheeks.

"I don't think our mom would mind if you lived with us." Grayson said happily.

"Well I would" Ethan said in a low, bitter tone.

"Fuck off. She's going to stay with us whether you like it or not."

Ethan groaned, but I ignored it.

I quickly stood up from off of the groubd, Out of Graysons grip. I turned around in circles looking for my mom, But she was nowhere to be found.

As I ran to a nearby cop I heard Grayson calling my name from behind. But I didnt care, I had to find my mom.

"Rebecca Miller?" I asked.

He shook his head, And as soon as he did I ran to the next.

"Rebecca Miller?" I asked.

She shook her head, I ran to the next.

After a while of running, I finally came across one male police officer, Nate Wilson.

"Sir?" I asked sheepishly. "Have you seen Rebecca Miller?"

"I'm sorry miss, But I'm not allowed to tell anything about the-"

"She's my mom, we were in the fire together."

His face instantly frowned, And the small wrinkles in his face became more visible.

"I-I thought they told you"

"Told me what?" I furrowed my eyebrows.

"Rebecca Miller is...dead. She died from too much smoke inhalation"
