"Bae, you really think this'll work?" I asked, watching the boy as he cut the last hole in the coconut with a knife. I had made my decision. I was leaving. There was too much to think about, and I knew Pan was only going to distract me.
"I think it's worth a shot. We don't have a lot of time," he picked up a conch shell, abnormally large especially compared to his size, "we need to get to Mermaid Lagoon. Do you think you can use your magic to get us there?"
"I--maybe," Baelfire grabbed my hand, "I thought you didn't like using magic?"
"I don't, but it's necessary," I raised an eyebrow at his remark, "and convenient," he added.
"You can't blame me if you end up cut in half," I said. He only rolled his eyes and I gave a slight laugh.
Taking a deep breath, I focused. I envisioned it in my mind, trying to remember all the sensations as I went. The warmth of the sand and the softness as it ran over my skin. I remembered the breeze flowing through my hair, the wind cool and salty as it came from off shore. My mind created pictures of it, the two sides of the cliff jutting abruptly upward and the visual of the waves hitting harshly during high tide. I opened my eyes.
I had done it, we were there. Mermaid lagoon. It was near-perfect to my imagination. The breeze somehow seemed eerie in the middle of the day. The waves crashed against the rock in the middle like always. The sand, however, seemed to be receding. There was less than I remember last... whenever last was.
Baelfire raised the conch shell, blowing into it. I cringed at the loud, echoing sound.
"What did that do?" I asked.
"Called our way out of here."
He picked up a spear that was laying on the ground. He likely had left it there for when he returned to finish trying to leave.
My breath caught in my throat as I saw a giant octopus... squid... monster thing slide into the shallow part of Mermaid Lagoon. Baelfire hesitantly walked up to it, prodding it with his spear. It inked and the kid took two pouches, filling them with the substance that tainted the blue-green water. The whole time I just stood back, watching, utterly disgusted.
He held one of the bags out to me. I swallowed thickly, taking it, "why did you need ink?"
"Giant Squid ink can paralyze beings of intense magical power. It can buy us enough time to get us of the island," Bae explained. I nodded, still apprehensive of the substance.
"I lived in mud for most of my life, but this is a new low for me."
The kid chuckled, "yeah, okay. Trust me, you'll be glad we got it. Mind poofing us back to our cave?"
"Our?" I raised an eyebrow. He pursed his lips.
"I meant my. Just, quick we have to get back before Pan and the boys do," the brunette rushed. I brushed off his awkwardness, taking his hand and imagining his cave. I opened my eyes when his hand left mine.
We set the materials down, rushing back to camp as fast as we could. It wasn't too far, but the fact that Peter moves it around so much makes it difficult to just pop in and out. Thankfully, we made it and no one was around. Baelfire visibly relaxed and I leant against one of the trees, definitely feeling that adrenaline high.
I kicked around a few sticks, before finding a particularly straight one. I picked it up and pulled out a knife, getting rid of the extra pieces sticking off it and starting to chip away at the bark. Peter taught me to make arrows by hand, despite knowing full well magic would be easier. He said it was more fun that way.
