I arrived at Mr. Thompson's house and removed my coat getting ready to start the day when I heard Davis clear his throat.
He held out his hand holding an envelope. I took it and opened it. I pulled out my paycheck and was stunned. He had docked me again.
"I don't understand," I said looking at him as I held the check.
"What don't you understand?"
"Why?"
"Because you broke the rules," he said sternly.
I looked at the check, he had docked me half my checked. I looked at him as he turned and walked away. I took a deep breath and placed the check back into the envelope. I placed it in the side pouch of my purse.
As I walked to the kitchen, I was utterly confused. Mr. Thompson said I was doing an amazing job but yet I was being docked. Was he not happy with my work? Now I would need to pick up extra hours at the gallery.
The plus side was rent was taken care of until the end of the year, so I could stash some money until I had to make rent again.
As I worked on breakfast, someone walked over to my purse and pulled the envelope from the side pouch. They opened it to reveal the check and their brows furrowed. They took the envelope and check and went into another room.
After a few minutes they returned and placed the envelope back into the side pouch of my purse.
I prepared food and placed it on a plate and onto the tray then picked it up and carried it to the door and set it down. As I stood and started to walk away, I heard a voice behind the door, "thank you Seraphina."
I stopped and froze. That was the first time I had heard from Mr. Thompson. I didn't care if I broke a rule, I said, "you're welcome Mr. Thompson." With that I walked away. Hell of I was going to get docked, might as well break a few rules.
I worked around the house, cleaning up and making food.
"Busy day?"
I looked up to see C.
"A little bit," I smiled.
"That's good. You're really a hard worker, you know that?"
"I try. I mean, I want to make sure Mr. Thompson is taken care of. I mean, even if I did break a rule by speaking to him but shhh don't tell Davis." I placed my finger to my lips.
"You're secret is safe with me," he smiled.
"Plus, even if he did find out, he will just dock me anyways like he did today."
"What do you mean?"
"It's nothing." I shook my head.
"Sera, tell me."
"It's just he docked my pay again. Luckily someone was kind and paid my rent for the rest of the year. But that's okay. I'll just pick up extra hours at the gallery and stash money so I have rent when it needs to be paid," I said trying to be positive.
He looked at me with concern, "but shouldn't someone helping you with rent, help?"
"It does and I appreciate it but I can't always rely on the kindness of strangers plus I'm confused."
"About what?"
"I was sent all these roses by Mr. Thompson and telling me I'm doing an amazing job but yet get docked half my check. Maybe he was just being nice," I suggested.
"I don't think he's the kind of man to do that and dock you," he reasoned.
"I don't know. I just want to make sure he is happy with my work. He was so kind to offer me this job and I really don't want to let him down especially after suffering a loss he did," I said simply.
