After that day Andrew cake by, I hadn't seen or heard from Connor. It was like he was a ghost. Well, a hungry ghost at least. I took a tray of food and set it in front of his door and walked away, like I had done so many times.
Each time I returned, the food was gone. I picked up the tray and sighed. I wasn't going to push him to talk but is not talking felt like we weren't anything at the moment.
I called Roman and asked about the gallery to pick up hours. I couldn't stand to stay in a house where I was being shut out. It felt lonely.
I also called Joe to see the status of my apartment. I was really missing it. At least when I was there, I was alone and was fine by it.
One night at the Gallery, Roman stopped in to grab some papers.
"Sera? You okay?"
"Yeah, just straightening up."
"Are you sure?"
"Well, no but does it matter?"
"Talk to me Sera."
I sighed and we sat on a bench in the gallery.
"I don't think Connor likes me anymore."
"Why do you say that?"
I explained everything that happened to Roman and he listened. Then he offered me some advice.
"Sera, be patient. I'm sure whatever he had been told was really hard for him to hear. I'm also sure, one day he will tell you."
"Roman, I get it but I have a feeling that, that day may never come. It just proves my track with guys is still horrible." A tear fell down my cheek. I wiped it away quickly. "It's okay. I'm just going to get back to work."
I got up quickly and walked away. I didn't want Roman to worry and I knew he would. I just went about my work as I heard the front door open and close. He must have left. That's when I stopped and cried.
I didn't want anyone to see me cry. It was something I didn't want to show people. I didn't need or want their pity.
I finished up and grabbed my coat. I went to turn off the light when someone caught my attention. Connor.
I stood there froze. How long had he been there?
"I could hear you crying." He didn't turn and look at me. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to shut you out but I didn't know how to deal with what Andrew had told me."
I stood there looking at him, not saying anything.
"Savannah wasn't my daughter."
Okay this shocked me.
"I called him a liar but he showed me papers. Apparently Clarissa got pregnant by someone else and passed Savannah off as mine. I gave her the world and she cheated on me. I had no idea."
My heart ached for him. I walked over and took a seat next to him, placing my purse in my lap. We both looked forward.
"I'm sorry Sera. I didn't mean to shut you out but I didn't know what to do."
"Talking would have been nice."
He snapped his head towards me, "you think I liked this?"
I turned and looked at him, "no but it's what you become good at."
"That's not fair."
"No." I stood up. "What's not fair is losing your parents at three. What's not fair is being shoved from foster home to foster home and hoping people keep their hands off of you. What's not fair is dealing with stupid guys because they can't handle your past. What's really not fair is having the guy, you fell in love with shut you out because of someone else's mistake. That isn't fair," I spat at him.
