Barbara helped me find a suitable dress and matching shoes for the party Connor's parents were throwing. I had to admit. She was a lovely woman. We also talked. It was nice to speak to someone that wasn't oogling my boyfriend, even though I found that quite humorous.

Tonight was the night of the party and Connor picked me up to take me. We walked inside and were greeted by one of the staff that took our coats. I listened to him talk to the staff. He never once made them feel less than anyone else. He also asked them about their families as well. That quality endured him to me.

We walked in and were greeted by Ruth and Gerald along with his siblings.

"Excuse me, I must introduce Sera to some people," Ruth said whisking me away.

She led me to some people and spoke with them while I trying to figure out an escape route. Finally after having met quite a few people I decided to get some air. I needed it.

I stood out back and looked at the night sky. The stars twinkled in the distance.

"Beautiful isn't it?"

I turned to see a woman around Ruth's age standing there.

"Yes. Very much so."

"You're Seraphina, right?"

"Yes. And you are?"

"Connor's mother in law," she said holding out her hand. I hesitantly shook it.

"Connor has spoken of Clarissa fondly."

"I see."

"I'm very sorry for your loss," I offered my condolences.

"Yeah well, it won't bring back my daughter and grandchild, now will it?" Her tone was biting.

"I understand, you're upset."

"No, you know nothing about a list of a child. So do not stand there and offer condolences for someone you know nothing about," she snapped. "My daughter was a wonderful woman and would be disturbed to see Connor with someone like you."

I was shocked.

"You do not belong here," she finished with a glare.

I realized she was right. I didn't belong here. I was just a foster kid that didn't belong in this world.

"Excuse me," I said quietly as I made my way inside. I couldn't stop the tears that started to flow. There will always be a constant reminder of not belonging.

"Sera?" I stopped when I heard Connor's voice. "What's going on?"

I turned and faced him, "I'm leaving. I don't belong here."

He broke the gap between us, "What are you talking about?"

"I don't belong here Connor. I know it and you know it. I'm sorry," I said as my voice cracked and turned and walked away. I grabbed my coat and left.

He turned to see the woman walk in with a smug look on her face.

"Get that damn look off your face!"

Her smugness left promptly. He walked over to her, "why? Why would you do that?!"

"Clarissa would never approve of someone so wretched."

"That's where you're wrong! We talked and she told me if I ever met someone that was kind and caring to be with them! She told me that if anything happened to her to be happy!"

"She was wrong."

"No, she was my wife and loved me. You're just a bitter old hag."

"Connor," Ruth exclaimed.
