Since I didn't really answer Connor, he left the subject alone. This didn't mean he didn't try really hard to convince me. All weekend he sent me gifts and notes. He would call wanting an answer but I still didn't know.
He even enlisted other people to help him to convince me to say yes to being his girlfriend. I didn't understand why they were so adamant about it. This is a big decision that you can't rush. It has to be meant with thoughtfulness and understanding.
Then came a knock at the door. I opened it to see Mrs. Thompson standing there.
"Mrs. Thompson?! What are you doing here?" My tone showed my surprise.
"May I come in?"
"Of course." I stepped aside as she strolled in. She removed her gloves and coat and I took it from her, laying it on the back of the chair.
She looked around and then turned and smiled at me.
"My son has told me he asked you to be his girlfriend."
"Yes."
"And you haven't given him an answer."
"Well, no."
"Is there a reason why?"
I took a deep breath and sighed, "It's a really big decision."
"Of course but let me explain something Sera. My son adores you. It's been the first time since he lost his wife and child that I have seen him happy. When he lost them, his world crashed and burned and I didn't think he would ever come out of it. Then Casey convinced him to meet you and you know what happened after that," she smiled at me.
"Mrs. Thompson."
"Please call me Ruth."
"Ruth. I like Connor, I really do but this is all new to me. I've never had a relationship before. Any of the guys I have met have either left me sitting there or never called me again. So, it's a little......" My voice trailed.
"Scary?"
"Yes."
She chuckled, "Sera, relationships are scary but they are really rewarding of you allow them to be."
I looked at her.
"Please give my son a chance," she said to me.
She picked up her coat and gloves and left. I picked up my phone.
Hello?
"That was a low blow sending your mom here."
Did it work?
"Unfortunately it did."
Then I heard a knock at my door. I opened it to find Connor standing there with his phone to his ear. I gave him a look as he said, "I got to call you back, I need to give my girlfriend a kiss." He hung up and pulled me to him as he crashed his lips into mine.
When he pulled back I looked at him, "you're still in trouble."
"I think I can handle that," he smiled as he kissed me again.
After I was able to pry him off of me, I looked around my apartment at all the things he had sent me.
"Okay we need to establish some ground rules."
"Okay. Shoot."
"One, stop sending me gifts. I can't even freaking move in my apartment. Two, stop sending your mom to do your dirty work. And Three, we need to take this slow."
"Done, done and done. Do you mind one more gift?" He asked sheepishly. I looked at him confused.
******
"You bought me a car?! Are you insane?!"
