Layah's P.O.V

My alarm clock went off with its classic, panic-inducing alarm sounds which I had set for 7 A.M. I rolled over pretty exhausted. I sat up and shrugged. I didn't get much sleep last night: probably because I was up worrying about when Kayla would arrive home. She said she would text me as soon as she reached home but never did. I plopped back on to the bed wondering if my dad was coming to see me off to university. He's always busy making new beats or on the road. My thoughts were rudely interrupted by an obnoxious baseline coming from my dad's in-home studio. He's home. A small smile crept across my face and I hopped out of bed to get ready for the day.

I quickly ran downstairs and nearly bumped into my mom who was crossing from one side of the kitchen to the other. I peeped over her shoulder and saw that she was making pancakes and eggs for breakfast.

"Morning mom, what's wrong?" I giggled, knowing exactly what the problem was. "Morning Lay, you know it's TOO damn early in the morning for your daddy to be playing them ghetto baselines over and over again." she sighed, rolling her eyes and smirking.

We burst out in laughter and suddenly the looped baseline turned off. We heard thumping coming from the basement staircase and the basement door swung open.

"Akekekeke, what's so funny?" chimed dad as he stole one of my grapes.

"Nothing. You lucky you came up here to see our daughter off to university." threatened mom with the spatula in his face.

"I'm lucky, huh?" he tested. I giggled knowing mom was thinking of a response.

Dad turned to me and with full excitement said, "MORRRNIINGGG BABY GIRL. How are you? Did you sleep well? Are you excited? Did you finish packing? Oh my God, my baby is lea-"

"Dad! calm down. Uni isn't that far", I giggled, half exasperated. "I'll visit y'all in my free time. Besides, I'm gonna be with Kayla."

"Oh Lord. We gotta pray for that Kayla, she's too fast." mom remarked and snickered. I rolled my eyes in response to her statement. Kayla and I have been best friends for forever. 'She isn't fast....she's just outgoing,' I thought to myself.

"My baby is going to experience a whole new world. It's a dark world out there Lay, you gotta be careful. Abby! get the camera quick!", dad chirped.

"I ain't getting a damn thing." she refuted. "Don't worry about him honey, these are going to be the best years of your life." she said as she squished me into a hug. Dad quickly joined in on the hug.

Best years of my life huh?
