Training!?!

         You wanted to pinch yourself to make sure you weren't dreaming when Papyrus said he's giving you a better job. You didn't think it would be so easy to impress Papyrus but you dismiss it as luck. You wondered how you would break the news to Grillby, he really likes having you around working for him but mostly because you two are good friends despite how crude he can be when it came down to paying you. You decided you would wait to break the news to him after your vacation since you only have four days left.

You stop thinking about Grillby's reaction of you leaving and ask Papyrus about the new job offer.

"So what exactly is this 'better job'?"

"BECOMING A ROYAL GUARDSMAN LIKE MYSELF OF COURSE, AND YOU CAN PATROL WITH ME INSTEAD OF HAVING TO DRAG MY SORRY EXCUSE OF A BROTHER AROUND!"

"Wait, do you even have authority to give me a job of becoming a royal guardsman?" I ask.

         He hesitates for a moment realizing that he couldn't actually hire you. You quickly change the subject before he could answer your first question and ask him another.

"Can you only patrol with other guardsman? Does that mean Sans is part of the Royal guard?"

"SANS AS A ROYAL GUARD!? HA! UNDYNE ALLOWS HIM TO COME WITH ME SINCE WE'RE BROTHERS! THAT PILE OF TRASH CAN'T EVEN PICK UP HIS OWN SOCK!"

"i heard that!" Sans yells from upstairs.

         You try to imagine what it would be like as being a royal guard even if that meant hunting down your species, on the other hand you would be honored and probably have special privileges.

"If you can't officially make me a royal guard, then does Undyne do that? I mean, i'm not very good at fighting."

Papyrus' face lights up when you say this.

"THAT'S RIGHT, YOU'RE NOT!"

"Excuse me, but you don't need to empha―"

         Papyrus interrupts you and puts both of his hands on your shoulders and looks straight at you, his smile becoming quite unsettling.

"WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THIS SOONER!? I'M GOING TO TRAIN YOU ARIE, WE WILL IMPRESS UNDYNE AND MAYBE THEN SHE WILL LET YOU JOIN! NYEH HEH HEH! I'M BRILLIANT!"

          You were taken back by Papyrus' enthusiasm about training you, you're curious to why Papyrus would suddenly want to help you and train you.

"WE WILL START TRAINING TODAY IN ONE HOUR! IN THE MEAN TIME, I MUST GO AND LOOK BACK AT THE BASICS OF WHAT IT TAKES TO BECOME A ROYAL GUARDSMAN!"

         He turns around and is about to open the front door but stops when you ask him something.

"Why are you doing this Papyrus? No one has ever done something this nice to me ever since I came to Snowdin."

         He walks over to you and kneels down on one knee so he is head level with you and gives you a serious look.

"I HAVE NEVER MET A MONSTER THAT WASN'T SCARED THE FIRST TIME THEY SAW ME. YOU'RE ALSO THE FIRST MONSTER I'VE MET THAT USES REAL WEAPONS INSTEAD OF MAGIC WHEN FIGHTING."

         You felt flattered from Papyrus' words when he tells you this. He stands up and hands you your scythe.

"YOU'RE STRONGER THAN YOU THINK ARIE, AND I WILL PROVE IT TO YOU."

                                                      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
         You were very excited and nervous about Papyrus training you, and try to imagine what it would be like to patrol with Papyrus while watching for humans. Come to think of it, you actually don't know the reason to why monsters want to hunt humans. It never crossed your mind to ask Toriel this before you left the ruins. All she told you was that monsters are very mean and don't like humans and never told you the reason why.
         You're sitting on the couch watching a lousy music video of Mettaton on t.v. and the front door bursts open from Papyrus. You turn off the t.v. and grab your scythe, ready for training at last.
"ARE YOU READY TO TRAIN WITH THE TERRIBLE PAPYRUS!?"
"You bet I am!" I say holding my scythe.
Papyrus notices you holding your scythe, eager to start.
"NOT SO FAST ARIE! WE WILL WORK ON FIGHTING TOMORROW, BUT FOR YOUR FIRST LESSON WE WILL BE GOING OVER THE SUBJECT ABOUT  THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MONSTER'S AND HUMAN'S SOULS."
         Papyrus goes on talking about how a monster's soul makes their entire body which is why when a monster's soul dies, their body turns to dust. Human's physical body separates their soul from them which gives their soul the ability to live on even after the human's physical form dies.
"BECAUSE A HUMAN'S SOUL CAN PERSIST AFTER DEATH, THIS IS WHY A MONSTER'S SOUL ARE CONSIDERED WEAK COMPARED TO A HUMAN'S SOUL..."
Papyrus then started to go on to what a monster's and human's soul looks like.
"...HAS YOU SHOULD ALREADY KNOW, A MONSTER'S SOUL IS THE COLOR WHITE.  A HUMAN'S SOUL HOWEVER, CAN BE A VARIETY OF UP TO SEVERAL COLORS WHICH ARE THE COLORS BLUE, LIGHT BLUE, ORANGE, GREEN, PURPLE, YELLOW, AND LASTLY RED."
         This is bad. If all monster's souls are white and human's souls are a different color, that means if any monster see's your soul― they'll know right away that you aren't a monster and do god knows what they'll do to you. Toriel never told you anything about human and monster souls. You're starting to wonder why Toriel let you leave with such little information, it didn't quite make any sense to you of why she did.
Papyrus starts to mess with his scarf and looks away from you.
"As a requirement of the Royal guard training, I must show you what a monster's soul looks like―so I will do the honor of showing you my soul." He says gradually getting quieter.
         Papyrus' seemed very uncomfortable while saying this as a deep blush was covering his skull and started to fidget. You watch him put his hands onto his chest and hesitates a bit while slowly pulling them away and you see a bright white light coming from behind Papyrus' hands but he hadn't removed his hands yet to fully show you. He was obviously very uncomfortable of doing this.
"Are you alright Papyrus'?"
"Obviously not! W-what do you think!?!" He says in a quiet shy tone.
"I can see that you're uncomfortable but why is that?" I say clearly not getting the message.
Papyrus gave you a confused expression along with a sigh of frustration.
"Look, I don't know what your culture was like where ever you came from, but where I come from―you only show your soul to a monster when you get intimate with another monster. The Royal guard teaching requirements are out dated so I still have to show you my soul." Says Papyrus getting quieter.
You didn't think it was possible for Papyrus to be this quiet.
"How about you show me your soul just for five seconds and then you can put it back." I say trying to help the situation.
"...Okay but only five seconds."
         He closes his eyes and looks away and moves his hands from his soul, you almost let out a gasp. It was the most beautiful thing you have ever seen. His soul was shaped like a upside down white valentines heart that glowed so bright that it could light up the whole living room if it was pitch black. The moment quickly ends as Papyrus quickly covers his soul with his hands and pushes it back towards his chest as you watch the glow of his soul slowly fade away.
"You speak nothing of this to any other monster that lives in the Underground or I will make you wish that you were never born, got it?" He violently whispers.
"Don't worry I promise." I say understandingly.
         You realize that you know very little about monsters and what they're really like. Toriel had told you wrong that all these monsters were evil and cold blood killing machines. So far you've only seen insecure monsters that lash out only because they're lonely and misunderstood. But you still understand why they want humans and for what purpose? You have a feeling that you're about to find out.
