Allie's POV

I made my way up to the gleaming black bus biting my lip as I stared up at it. I heard a crash inside and winced. I looked skyward saying a silent prayer as I reached for the handle to open the door. I tugged realizing it was locked and grumbled under my breath. What the hell could the code be? I guess I could go back inside to get it from PJ. Then I thought about it and keyed in the last four digits of his social security number.

Bingo, I thought as the light turned green. Same as the gate code at the house and the gun safes. Man never changed, I thought rolling my eyes and tugging the door open. I jumped as I got to the top of the steps as a coffee mug whizzed by my head. I instantly saw red. I knew he hadnt been intentionally aiming at me but still.

"What the hell Brantley?" I yelled making him turn around with his hands on his hips snarling at me. "You almost took my head off!"

"Well darlin," he growled narrowing his eyes picking up another cup bouncing it in his hand. "Come a little closer and I bet my aim improves."

"I want to see you try," I growled back stalking closer to him. "I can still take your ass BG."

"Want to see you try Allie!" he snarled before slamming the mug down on the counter. I heard it crack as I connected with the granite. He pointed a finger at me. "I said I wanted you gone and I meant it."

"Well tough shit drama queen," I said cocking a hip and smirking at him. I tried to school my features and not let him see I noticed his eyes tracing over my body. "I'm here to stay. Deal with it."

"The hell I will," Brantley said before he started pacing. I ignored how my heart beat sped up at the sight of those broad shoulders bowed up in anger. I had seen him fight, a lot, and it was something about that sight that used to get to me. Lord, back in the day, let that man go full on caveman and I was a puddle of goo.
"And I ain't no drama queen! What you think you could just waltz back into my life and I would hang back like a good boy and take it! Come on Allie Cat, I thought you knew me better than that! You seriously didn't fucking think I would be okay with this. Correct me if I am wrong, I am getting older and forgetting things Ben says, but you walked out on ME! Handed ME signed divorce papers. Never looked back then go and change your name back to Allison."

"I did what I needed to do for me Brantley," I said quietly shaking my head. "I couldn't be pushed to the side and expected to wait for you to throw me a bone. Yes, I started going by Allison again and went back to my maiden name. That was to separate myself from you. I tried to keep it as professional as I could. We had enough messy when we were younger. Look, I told Scott when he approached me for this it wasnt going to going to sit well with you. Until I got here, I thought you already knew."

"Fuck!" Brantley yelled stopping his pacing. "You mean to tell me that you had no idea that I didn't know! What the hell were they thinking!" He drug in a ragged breath before pinching the bridge of his nose. I jumped when he slammed his hand down onto the counter. I took a tentative step closer to him.

"I don't know what they were thinking B," I said softly. I winced to myself as I saw his entire body go rigid at that one letter. I cleared my throat trying to get myself together. I knew being around him wasn't going to be easy. "Look Brantley, can we just try to make the best of this. You will hardly know that I am here. I will stay out of your way. I promise."

Brantley's POV

A humorless chuckle slipped past my lips as the hair on the back of my neck stood up at her words. Allie had seriously lost her mind if she thought I was just gonna bend over on this one. She was sadly mistaken. I had thrown myself into work so hard after she left that even Mama had threatened to hog tie my ass and make me stay home. Hell, one really low night I had been sitting on the back deck smoking a cigarette and contemplated with myself on just setting the whole damn house on fire.
