You finally slumped down on the old, vomit-stained bed, completely prepared for the next hit. You'd already melted the golden brown beauty with that old lighter that's only just got enough gas in it, and a soot-coated spoon, probably covered in the sweet drug too. You'd taken the cap off the syringe, you'd filled the chamber, the rag was tied so tight around your arm that you were sure it was turning blue.
No matter what little signs you had to avoid this, you ignored them. What was the point? He was gone, left you for that girl, whatever her name was. Lily? Liliana? It didn't matter. You'd lost your job, your home. This was all you had left. Sitting on another junky's bed, with the last of your money spent on heroin. It didn't matter that you'd been clean for two years, thanks to Noel, or that you'd finally gotten your life back on track. This was your last fix on it, both because you had no more money, and no way of borrowing any, and because there was no way you could survive putting this much into your system. That was the plan, anyway.
You were shaking, which made it almost impossible to shoot up. You couldn't find your veins and you couldn't understand why your body with shaking so violently, until the first sob erupted from your raw throat. Being on such a hard drug for two weeks, no break, was bound to screw with your body and your mind though. You weren't shocked by this. Old habits, you thought.
Just as you managed to steady your hand, your phone vibrated. This flat was a dead zone for service most of the time, so all your texts and calls from the past few days would come in at the same time.
17 missed calls and 26 texts. All from Noel.

Are you alright?

I've seen some shit about you in the news. I hope to fuck it isn't true

Pick up your phone

Please

I need to know you're alright...

Look, I know we broke up. That was my choice, but me and my, ex now I guess, didn't work out. I can't move on. I worry about you too much. I care about you too much too

I'm so far away from our house, but I will travel all the way back just to check on you, even if you turn me away at the door. As long as you're alive

You're not there

Where are you?

Y/N, answer me!

Please...

I don't want to have to track your phone, but I will if I have to

I'm sorry, N/N, I had no choice

I'm coming to get you

Shit, you're in the rough end of town

That's where all the drugs are

Of course that's where you went

I won't stop calling you until you pick up! Or until I see that you aren't fucking dead

I swear to god, if you OD, I'm gonna revive you, then kill you again

I don't know who these people you're staying with are, but they won't let me in

Tell them to let me in

Let me help you

I want to save you from yourself again darling

You did so well. You can get better again.

Just let me in

Please

The last few texts were from about 10 minutes ago. He's outside.
Noel is outside waiting to save you.
But you don't get up. Instead, you push him from your mind, try and get that goddamn hand to stay still, and place the cold needle over your blue veins. You close your eyes...
Your finger is over the plunger...
You start to apply pressure...

"Y/N! What the fuck are you doing?!"
Noel...
"FUCK OFF!" You screamed louder than you ever had before, the first words you'd really spoken in the time since he'd left.
"Yeah, hello," he sighed. "Put it down before I throw it out the fucking window..."
"No."
"Y/F/N, put the FUCKING heroin down. NOW!"
Noel had never shouted at you before now. You didn't know what to think. So you didn't. You just cried. Ugly sobs forced their way out of the dry cave of your mouth. You stared down at the track lines on your wrists and forearms, tears landing on them, magnifying the hideous truth of what you had let yourself become again.
You were so lost in your self loathing that you didn't hear Noel tiptoeing over to you. You hardly felt him take the syringe from you, but when you did, you didn't fight. You didn't even look up. There was a silence for a moment before you heard the faint shattering or glass. You knew he'd chucked it, but his other hand stayed on yours and you finally glanced up at him.
In his eyes, you didn't see hatred, nor anger, not even disappointment. Only sadness, fear, and... love?
His gentle fingers slowly untied the rag around your arm, grazing your skin ever so slightly a couple times, making you blush. You'd missed his touch.
Once he'd discarded the rag to the floor, he took your arms in his hands and looked at them for a moment. He sighed ever so lightly, looking up at you. Your eyes met, and you noticed tears pooling in his, before you felt tears cascading down your own cheeks.
"Y/N... I never would have left if I knew that you'd do this..."
He ran his fingers over the track marks, back and forth in a soothing motion as you sobbed. You'd fallen so far down the rabbit hole, and it was deeper than before. You couldn't find your way out alone. Noel was your escape. The little door leading to a wonderful world of fantasy. The door disappeared, you couldn't get out. Now, though, you saw light shining through the cracks in your addiction.
"I'm so sorry..."
"Don't... you don't need to say that. I shouldn't have left. I should have guessed. And I'm assuming you know how much you were about to fuck yourself over, right?"
You groaned, hoping the near suicide attempt would be shrouded in the horror of drugs.
"Yeah, death was the aim," you muttered.
You felt his hands start to tremble and his breathing become ragged.
"You got so much worse than I thought you would... I didn't know you COULD get this bad, sweetheart. I had no idea that it could get to this point. I'd never even noticed the older scars..." he said, eyes fixed on the scars from your past of cold razors kissing your skin every night. You just shook your head this time. Any attempt at talking was sure to come out as a mild squeak and nothing more. You didn't want to talk about this. Not now.
"You don't have to tell me anything, but know that you will always be the most beautiful girl, the most intelligent, kind, caring and amazing girl I will ever know. Whether you can still see that, I don't know. You just need to be told, because I never told you how much I cared for you. I never told you how much I love you... I thought I'd never get the chance."
Your heart skipped a beat as you realised what he'd just said. In the three years you'd known Noel, 2 years together, not once had he told you he loved you. The both of you thought it was a strange social concept and avoided it. That was before you realised how very real a feeling it was.
"I- I love you too, Noel. I'm going to try and get my life back on track... I just have one question," you sighed.
"What's up, love?" He smiled.
"Can we go home now? Together?"
He placed a soft, loving kiss on your lips, and pulling away, he said
"There's no place I'd rather go."
