Chapter 46

David and Perri's solo visit with Lila went really well. She's as happy as a clam when I get home, and I can tell that Perri is crazy about her.

Before they leave, David pulls me aside while Perri uses the restroom.

"Are you back together with Mendes?" he asks.

"No! He moved to Brooklyn, we ran into each other, and we're friends."

"Good."

"What does that mean?" I ask.

"I don't know. I just don't really like the idea of some guy hanging around all the time with Lila here."

"You have a girlfriend," I say.

"But she's not sleeping over with my daughter here. There's a difference."

"So you are saying I can't have a serious relationship? Ever? What if I want to get married? Do I need your approval?"

Perri steps out of the powder room and looks from David to me. She can tell she's interrupted something.

"I'll go outside and wait while you two finish up whatever this is."

"No need. Jess and I are done," David says.

We're so not done, but I am not going to get into a fight right now.

I feed Lila and put her down for her nap. I crawl into my bed and go to the group text I have going with Liz and Jules.

Liz got married this past spring. The wedding was in California, so I had to miss it. Lila was just too little for a long flight and wedding.

Jules is dating a banker in Toronto. I suspect they'll tie the knot soon.

I tell the girls about Shawn. They are both surprised about the envelope story, but neither is surprised we'd met back up.

Jules: When I ran into Shawn at that club this August, he told me he was moving to Brooklyn and I joked that he was going there to find you.

Me: What?

Jules: He didn't tell you he knew you were there?

Liz: Oh shit.

Me: No. He acted shocked to see me.

Liz: Ha

Jules: He knew you moved into your Nana's place.

Me: How the hell did he know that?

Liz: Not meeeeeee

Jules: Ok, so I ran into him twice and the first time he asked me if you were still in Toronto. I told him you'd moved to Brooklyn.

Me: Is that all you told him?

Jules: Yeah. I kept my trap shut about Delilah. I'm not a total big mouth.

Liz: That's debatable

Jules: Jessie, you know what this means. He still loves you!

Me: He wanted to move to Brooklyn long before we were a thing. It means nothing.

Liz: It is kind of crazy that he lives so close to you, though.

Me: Coincidence.

Jules: No way.

Liz: I have to go. Let's plan to get-together. Obviously at Jess's place since she has baby Lila. Maybe after the holidays?
