xxiv. DESTROYER DESTROYED

OUTSIDE THERE WAS A DISTURBANCE, a mother and her child running out of the streets as the Destroyer carved a path with its metal feet. It blew up a grocery store, the window panes blowing out and all of the morsels and parcels of food destroyed; hence the name. An SUV was blown from its tires, and the Warriors Three and Lady Sif marched down the road with their weaponry in hand, ready to fight the thing. "Keep it distracted," Lady Sif told the other three as she walked behind them. The Destroyer's eyes open, an orange glow filling up inside him and he looks down at a gas station, blowing up the thing.

Fandral and Hogun gestured for Volstagg to start running towards them, the warrior leaping and the other two helping him along the way. "For Asgard!" He yelled as he flew through the air. The Destroyer knocked him backward onto the roof of a vehicle.

Jane, Thor, Darcy, and Erik hid behind a building that still let them watch on. Volstagg watched as the Destroyer stepped closer to him, the large alloy frame of the thing blocking the sun. Sif jumped from a building and landed on the Destroyer's back, stabbing him through with a long metal spear. The end became stuck in the pavement, disabling the robot from moving. It shut down for a bit, the vibrant orange color of his insides dying down.

Volstagg smiles.

It powered back on, turning around, the gears inside him abling him to turn all his body parts to face Sif, his eye pockets opening once more. She jumps off as soon as the blast of fire is shot. He slides from the spear, "Fall back!"

It shot a line of fire, destroying the street and different multi-colored shops during the process. Another blast threw Sif and the Warriors Three back in various directions, the three breaking through a cake shop window and Sif landing on top of the trunk of a car, all groaning at their impacts. "Go. Now. Run!" Thor urges the three mortals to move, following them shortly. Volstagg stands up and locks eyes with the Destroyer by accident. His eyes widen as the orange flames rise up in the Destroyer's body, blowing up the shop and throwing the three into several directions again. Jane screams as they run through the flying broken glass, shielding their faces with their arms. Thor runs towards Sif, grabbing her by the shoulders and facing her to him. "Sif. Sif, you've done all you can."

"No," she shakes her head. "I will die a warrior's death. Stories will be told of this day."

"Live and tell those stories yourself. Now go!" She nods quickly and runs away, leaving Thor to move away as a car was flipped. "You must return to Asgard," he runs up to Volstagg, Hogun, and Fandral, carrying Sif's small shield. "You have to stop Loki."

"What about you?" Fandral asks.

"Do not worry, my friends, I have a plan."

"Come on," Fandral beckons to the other two and heaves Volstagg to the other side of the street. "We need to fall back, come on." He says to Sif, Jane, Darcy, and Erik. They all begin moving out of the way.

Thor drops Sif's shield, "Wait!" He walks to the middle of the pavement, squinting at the sun, and begins walking towards the Destroyer. "What's he doing?" The Destroyer kicks a car out of his way, the two already closer together. "Brother," Thor commences, "whatever I have done to wrong you, whatever I have done to lead you to do this, I am truly sorry. But these people are innocent. Taking their lives will gain you nothing."

The Destroyer's eyes open, flames licking up. "So take mine an end this."

In Asgard, Loki places his hand down on the throne and the Destroyer's eyes close up, the flames no longer seen. Thor smiles. The Destroyer turns around, feigning surrender, but it quickly retracts its arms and hits Thor in his face, sending him flying backward with a groan. He lands on the ground in a heap, cuts all over his face and gasping for a breath his lungs did not seem to take. Jane runs over, sitting next to the god, and rubs his face with her hands. "It's over."

"No," she denies. "It's not over."

"I mean it, you're safe."

"I'm safe."

"It's over." He gasps his last breath, the woman beside him shaking her head. "No," she begins crying, tears making their way down her face, grabbing on to his face softly. The Destroyer walked away, Odin's eye shedding a tear for his son.

"Whosoever holds this hammer," the rock around the hammer cracks, "if he be worthy, he shall possess the power of Thor." The hammer flies out of the tent and begins making its way towards its rightful owner. The sound of a jet airplane is heard, Jane turned around to see a streak of clouds in the sky, a flash of light as quick as lightning is seen.

"Jane!" Erik yells, running towards the mourning woman and picking her up in spite of her protests. The hammer flies into Thor's hand, a flash of lightning striking down on the god, and Loki turns around to view the scene. The metal links of Thor's armor are being placed back on his arms, the gauntlets he wore snapped into place.

"Oh. My. God."

Thor throws his hammer, the Destroyer moving from its course, but when it comes back around he is hit in the face, thrown to the ground. The hammer flies back into the god's hand. He twirls his hammer and flies up into the air, creating a flume of air as the Destroyer shoots another blast of fire. The Destroyer blocks incoming cars with his arms. The air picked him up and he releases two bursts of fire, Thor preventing each one with his hammer, swinging it like a baseball bat. He forced the last flume of fire back into the Destroyer's eyes, a shockwave causing the Destroyer to shut down and fall back to the Earth. Thor lands on his feet and walks back to his group of friends.

"Is this how you normally look?"

"More or less."

"It's a good look."
