XXXIX. CAPTURED

T HAS BEEN A FEW DAYS, no word from Laelia and everyone was in ruins; what is she never came back? What if she had been struck down? Aron sat on the edge of the stairs, arms folded over his knees, brown eyes darting everywhere. Darys cracked his knuckles, the pops filling their ears, and Allister did nothing, just watching his hand. "You love her, don't you?" Arin asks, giving no clue to which man he was talking to, Darys stopping himself from wrapping his hand with a wrap.

"How could you not?" Darys replies.

"Of course, it's hopeless for the both of you, a sellsword from the fighting pits, a disgraced knight, neither of you is fit consort for the Queen," this makes both taller men look at him, stopping their actions. "And she does have a husband, as well."

"He's dead."

"Still, he has been dead for roughly a few weeks, hasn't he? She won't move on that quick. And I know about your time together, Darys, and trust me, she was using you to forget her husband for a night. She doesn't really love you, you know. But, we always want the wrong woman."

"Does he always talk so much?" Darys stares at Allister, raising an eyebrow. Allister nods quietly, two pairs of footsteps coming closer to them. Melora was holding Grey Worm by his arm, helping him walk with his injuries.

"Allister the Zada," Allister nods to the young commander.

"Torgo Nudho."

"He should not be here," Grey Worm says to the imp sitting the furthest from him, Melora placing her hand on his arm.

"No, but he is."

"Our queen ordered him exiled from city."

"Our queen," Darys says, "would be dead if not for him."

"Ziry's drēje. Se nyke would sagon morghe lo daor syt se. . ." Melora searches for the right word as she looks at Arin, "Byka vala." (It's true. And I would be dead if not for the. . . little man.)

"Krubo. Nyke pāsagon bona's se udir. Apologies. Issa Krefson iksos nykeā angotan pungilla. . ." (Dwarf. I believe that's the word. Apologies. My Krefson is a bit nostril. . .) Melora smiles at him, trying to not laugh for that would be rude to do so, but instead corrects him.

"Nykeā angotan puñila." (A bit rusty.)

"Puñila," Arin repeats, feeling a bit abashed about his mistake. "Thank you." Allister rubs his eyelids with pointer and thumb, tapping his foot against the stones of the stairs. "I am sorry," Grey Worm apologizes in a thick accent. "Sorry I'm not there to fight for our Queen." Darys continues wrapping his hand in bandages, "Missed a good scrap." Allister shakes his head, "None of that matters now. The longer we sit here bantering, the longer Laelia is out there in the wilderness."
