Maria sat with Alex and John in the middle of the painstakingly white hospital waiting room. Her hoarse voice was accompanied by her red and puffy eyes. Her body ached from crying. She looked up when the door suddenly burst open. Two young women literally fell into the room. One had kinky, brown hair and was wearing a pink sundress. The other had straight, black hair and wore a blue halter top and faded shorts.
"Where's Peggy?!" the one in blue frantically asked.
"The ICU, Eliza. Nobody's allowed back there. Not even you guys, and you're her sisters!" Alex answered, seemingly frustrated. The one in pink shook her head in annoyance and walked up to the front desk.
"Could you kindly tell me the condition of Margarita Schuyler?" she asked in a tone that implied that she would not take no for an answer. Also, the fact that she used Peggy's real name showed that she really meant business.
"And who might you be?" the lady behind the desk inquired.
"Angelica Schuyler. I'm her older sister," Angelica said.
"I'm sorry Miss Schuyler, but-" the lady was abruptly cut off.
"We're all family and close friends here. Tell us. Or at least let us see her," Alex said calmly but sternly as he displayed his detective badge. Most of the time, though, it wasn't his badge that made people listen, but his voice and stance.
"Of course, sir," she mumbled. "I'll check with her doctor immediately." She stood up and quickly walked through the door into the ICU. After a few minutes, she returned.
"The doctor will see you now. Room 1801," the woman said. Everyone stood up and began to walk, but were stopped suddenly by the sound of feet approaching behind them.
"Wait up! Me and Herc are coming, " a thick french accent yelled. The man coming toward them had his hair pulled back into a curly ponytail on top of his head. He was trailed by a bulkier man wearing a beanie.
"Herc! Laf! You got here just in time!" Eliza exclaimed. "They're allowing us to go see her!"
"I'm assuming they're with you?" the woman stated skeptically.
"Yes," Maria said simply. It was the first time she had spoken in hours.
"Very well then," the lady sighed, pushing her glasses up the bridge of her nose. "You're free to go in now." The group navigated down the hallway. The air smelled, well, like a hospital. Once they arrived in front of room 1801, they all filed in. A sudden haze of panic hung in the air. The view of Peggy was blocked by the tall doctor.
"Any direct relatives, friends or partners?" the doctor asked bluntly.
"Yes. That would be all of us. Now could you please tell us what's going on with her?" Angelica replied, suddenly frazzled.
"Well, the good news is that, after we removed the bullets from her body, there were only minor and easily treatable infections," the doctor states. "The bad news," the doctor adds with a sigh, stepping aside to reveal Peggy, "Miss Schuyler has fallen into a coma. When she was shot, it appears as if she fell and smashed her head on the floor. Additionally, the gunshot between her ribs punctured one of her lungs, resulting in a lack of oxygen to the body. Both these things caused seemingly temporary brain damage, which lead to her falling into a coma. We're...........we're not sure if she'll wake up." The entire room fell silent. Then Maria spoke up.
"No," she shook her head. "NO NO NO! SHE WILL WAKE UP! DON'T YOU DARE TELL ME SHE WON'T!"
"Ma'am, we're doing everything we can," the doctor says quietly.
"I SWEAR TO GOD-" Maria cried before Alex grabbed her and pulled her into a hug.
"Thank you for informing us. Could you....... ," Alex began. "Ah, could you please give us a minute?"
"As you wish, sir. I'll be two doors down if you need me." And with that, the doctor collected his things and left the room. Maria fell to the ground with her head in her hands.
"I swear to god," she repeated. "If I find out who did this, I'll kill them."
"When," John corrected.
"When what?" Maria asked.
"WHEN we find out who did this. Me and Alex are detectives, remember?" John answered. Maria wiped her eyes and stood up.
"Then let's go. Let's start the investigation right now. Who's in?"
"We are," everyone said in union.
Once Maria was the last one in the room, she turned and glanced lovingly at Peggy. Though she'd never admit it, Maria had the BIGGEST crush on her. Some may even go as far as to call it love. With those feelings in mind, Maria knelt down and kissed Peggy on the forehead.
"I'll find out who did this, Peggs. I promise."
