Eliza POV

I woke up to my head pounding. Groaning, I sat up in bed. That's weird. I don't remember going to bed. It was then that I noticed Angelica and Maria passed out next to me. Suddenly, I heard a familiar voice speak up from a man standing in the doorframe leading out of the bedroom.

"Bonjour mon amie! I made breakfast!"

"Oh. Hey Laf. Thanks. When did you get here?" I replied while he set a tray with eggs and a drink in front of me.

"Last night," Laf said.

"Mmmmm," I hummed, deciding not to question it. I was about to take a sip from the drink he gave me, but the smell of it wafted into my nose and I jerked back. "What's in this cup?"

"Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette's special hangover drink," he announced. Then I realized why I couldn't remember Laf coming over last night.

"Oh my god," I exclaimed while looking from Angelica and Maria to Laf. "We all got drunk, didn't we?" Laf nodded and giggled.

"When I got here, Maria was taking shots on the floor and you and Angie were running around screaming 'I ship it' for some reason."

"Sounds like something drunk me would do," I laughed. "I wonder why we were chanting th-" I suddenly remembered the answer. "Holy Lin, Laf."

"Did you just say 'Holy Lin'? As in Lin-Manuel Miranda, the first treasury secretary of America?" Lafayette asked.

"That's beside the point," I answered, waving my hand at him. "I just remembered why Ange and I were screaming 'I ship it'."

"Ooooo," Laf said, leaning closer with intrigue. "Do tell."

"So, we were playing 'Never Have I Ever'-"

"Alcohol version I assume," Laf stated, cutting me off.

"Right. Anyway, I said 'Never have I ever had a crush on my best friend' and Maria. Took. A. Shot," I mused with excitement.

"Je l'envoie!!!" Laf squealed happily.

"What's going on?" Angelica asked groggily while she sat up. After we explained everything, she looked toward Maria warily.

"Let's keep this a secret, okay?" Angelica said.

"Alright," I replied. I understood my older sister's reasoning completely. That's Maria's secret to tell, not ours.

"Oui," Laf agreed.

Lafayette POV

I'll only tell the rest of the squad. They're trustworthy.

Laurens POV

I grasp Alexander's hand tightly in my own as we walk towards Peggy and Maria's apartment. Alex had texted Maria earlier to tell her we were coming over to discuss suspects. Maria never responded, but it said she read the text, so we took that as our okay to come over. When I knocked on the door, Laf was the one that answered. I cocked an eyebrow at him before he shrugged and said "I was on hangover duty last night." We then followed him into the apartment to find Eliza, Angelica, and Maria sprawled out on the sofa. "Hey lams," Angelica said, still seeming somewhat drunk. I simply giggled and rolled my eyes.

"Hi!"

"So," Maria started, "Who do y'all have on the list?" Alex looked at me, his eyes suddenly filled with worry. I squeezed my boyfriend's hand in reassurance and answered Maria.

"Well, for starters, we've got T. Jeffy."

"Alright. That makes sense," Maria replied, glaring at the door as if she could see through it to Jefferson's apartment.

"We also have Madison," I said.

"Thank poor boy's too sick to do something like that. I think he's innocent," Eliza rambled.

"Agreed. Do you think we should take him off the list?" I ask, turning to Alexander.

"I think it's safe to say that he's innocent. Besides, Madison's never really caused a tissue," Alex said, seemingly very proud himself. I laughed at his pun and leaned into his side.

"Jeu de mots précis," Laf chuckled. Everyone nodded in reply.

"Anyway, our next suspect is John Adams," I announce.

"Ugh. I despise that man. Peggy doesn't deserve his hatred. Who else?" Maria said.

"Angelica," I stated blankly.

"What did I do?" Angelica questioned as she fell on the floor.

"The only reason you're on there is because you got in a fight with Peggy a few days before the incident. We don't really believe you're guilty," Alex explained.

"Wait, you and Peggy were fighting?" Eliza asked her sister.

"It was a tiny argument. Nothing to kill my younger sister over," she spoke up from the floor.

"Is that it?" Maria questioned.

"Well, there was someone I was thinking about putting on the list, but I don't know them well enough to know if they'd be murderous," Alex stammered. He was tensing up again, so I wrapped my arms around his waist in an attempt to hug him. He had told me about this person on the way here.

"Who is it then?" Maria inquired suspiciously.

"Well, I don't know Maria. Who's James Reynolds?" Alex asked in a quiet voice. It takes a lot to silence Alexander, so I knew he was having trouble confronting Maria on the topic.

Maria POV

I inhaled a sharp breath before sitting up completely. "How do you know about James?" I asked in a shaky voice.

"I was looking on the internet to see if you had connections with any sketchy people and instead found your old marriage records," Alexander replied. He then realized that I was on the verge of tears. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have brought it up," he said with a guilt-ridden tone.

"No, no. It's time I told y'all about James. That bastard just about ruined my life," I sighed. I finally let the tears fall. Everyone wrapped me in a tight hug before I took a deep breath and prepared to tell the painful story.

"It all began in high school."
