J's POV
"Do you have any ideas on what may be wrong with her?" This was a genuine concern of mine.
"Well, I can just assume it's her past and there isn't much we can do about that..." Taye says. We had decided to get up and walk back to Ara's room to check on her.
"Is she sensitive?" I asked, as we entered the elevator.
"Not usually, quite the opposite most of the time. But I think she has just been trying to appear tough and strong." He runs his hand through his hair and releases a frustrating sigh. "Why is she so... Ugh!"
"Tell me about it."
"I mean, she is a great person and all, but she just gets me so fed up with her crap sometimes! She barely makes an effort to take to others and I know it's not her fault, but she makes it worse by taken classes online. She barely left her house last year!"
"That's some deep introverted behavior."
"Yes! But I mean, I do enjoy those few times we go and hang out. Those are cherished moments for me." He looked so happy just thinking about this, but I don't know why I felt uneasy.
"Sounds like you really like her man!" I playfully punched his arm anyway, making it worse.
"Yeah..."
We laughed a little as we got off and walked into her room.
She wasn't there though.
I called out a nurse passing by and asked for her whereabouts. She said she saw her going to the roof.
"The roof?" Taye and I looked at each other, giving each other a similar worried look and bolted in that direction.
She can't do this again. Not twice in a row at least.
We ran up the flights of stairs, and the door swung open as the cold breeze hit me face on. That wasn't my problem though. I climbed the few steps left and saw her sitting on the edge. She had a blanket around shoulders and her head tilted forward a bit, as she used her arms to support her. She looked so relaxed as the wind blew through her hair.
"Hey!" Taye yelled and walked over to her, then froze when he saw her face.
"What? What happened?" I quickly rushed over. Her eyes closed and tear streaks on her face.
"Oh, well that's great..." Taye careful but forcefully pulled her to her feet and then put her on his back. "It isn't as bad as I thought," he said.
"What do you mean by 'it isn't as bad'?" I said, while following him down and back to her room.
"This one isn't that bad and it isn't unusual. When she doesn't have peace of mind, she considers doing it but ends up crying herself asleep before actually doing anything. It's scary, but..." he pauses and sighs. "That's just the way she is..."
The saddest smile appears on his face before he continues into her room and lays her down.
Looking at her lying peaceful, I let out a small sigh as well.
"This girl is something." We look at each other and laughed again, before someone barges into the room.
"Simi?!" I yelled.
"What happened again? What did-," she looks to see Ara on the bed sleeping peacefully, well mostly. "Why does this keep happening? Shouldn't we look for help?" She asks.
"No, this is something she needs to figure it on her own." Taye looks Simi up and down before continuing. "And who are you?"
"I'm his and her friend. And I don't understand why every time I'm not around something bad happens." She moves to sit on a chair and pouts. Annoying, yet adorable. Sister material right here.
"You guys are too loud," a soft voice says. She looks directly at me before adjusting herself in bed.
"Well then, I guess we'll be going then." I walk over to her and pat her head. "Sleep well and don't do something stupid."
She doesn't respond as we all exit the room.
Ara's POV
I watched them leave before I sat up. This is really stressful and all I want to just have a peaceful time.
Walking out of the room, I head to what seems to be a place for relaxing and chatting.
"Too many people," I mumbled. I find myself once again going to the roof.
I just felt so free up there and I didn't worry about anything.
I take a deep breath in as I sit close to the railing on one side of the roof.
"Can I really become something if I let you?"
Of course.
"But you said I shouldn't let you get to myself before I get to myself."
Yes, I did. But I didn't specify who is who.
"What do you mean?"
Who are you and what am I? Who are they? Which one is yourself and who is the right voice as well as the wrong voice? Which voice is telling the truth? You need to find yourself before I get to you, but then again, who am I to give the advice like this?
"Wait what-"
What am I?
I let those words sit for a bit.
What have I been listening to this entire time? How can I stop myself from taking over myself? Is it really that....
A headache grows on me as I start to think more into this and I decide to quickly run back downstairs before something happens.
Just as I'm about to close the door, something dark passes by.
I looked and it was nothing.
I continue back, but little did I know the shadow that followed me....
