Chapter 6: Falling

Niko's POV

"I'll take out one of the Nevermore, you guys try to take the other." I turned away from Kai and the others, then shadow traveled. I hoped that my calculations were right, or I'm in for a long fall. It seemed that luck was on my side today, I shadow traveled in front and above the Nevermore. I fell for a few moments, then crashed into the Nevermore's head and nearly rolled off its head. I nearly fell off its back, but luckily I grabbed onto some of its feathers and used them to pull myself back up. As I climbed, the Nevermore thrashed about trying to shake me off. I finally managed to climb to the head of the beast and pull out Jackal, unloading six consecutive shots into its skull. The bullets didn't kill the Nevermore and there wasn't a way for me to reload my gun with one hand, so I had to go to plan B. I holstered Jackal and focused my aura into my free hand. In almost an instant, row two inch long black claws extended from my fingertips. I pulled back my hand then drove the claws as deep as they would go with all my strength, into the Nevermore's back. The bird screeched in pain and began to thrash more. I drove my claws into the Nevermore over and over again, doing the most damage I could. I decided to force the Nevermore to crash into the cliff, to make sure it will die. I climbed back up to the head of the giant bird and drove my claws deep into the skull. Black blood splattered my face as the Nevermore plummeted. The Nevermore crashed into the top of the cliff, making a slight trench as it crashed.

I slid off of the Nevermore, covered head to toe in its black blood. I turned to see the other students were staring at me and the dead Nevermore. The claws had retracted just before I crashed, but that didn't get rid of the claw marks on the Nevermore. I saw Blake in the crowd, smirking slightly. Kai walked up and gave me a slap on the back. "Good job N. You took down a Nevermore on your own." He said. He sounded proud. One of the feelings I haven't felt in a long time, having someone proud of me. Its good while it lasted, but I decided to reflect the praise. "Well what about Ruby. She decapitated the other, all I did was shoot it and crash it into a cliff." I said. The Nevermore that I thought I killed screeched, I pulled out my gun and said. "Why won't you stay dead". I shot the beast once for every word I said. By the time I was done, the Nevermore was dead, but perhaps I went a bit overkill. The only remains of the skull of the Nevermore were bloody skull fragments, half buried in the ground. Everyone was looking at me. Some in awe, others in fear.

Kai was the first to speak. "Holy shit."
