Chapter 13: Powers

Kai's POV

Niko and Weiss had been gone for about a hour, and I had begun to think about what could be taking them so long. I wasn't willing to wait any longer and I was about to go and find them when I ran into someone, quite literally. I was typing on my scroll and next thing I know, I bumped into something. "Oh. Sorry, my bad." I said. "No problem." The person I ran into said. He was taller than me and wore a dark blue trench coat, black shirt, jeans, and boots. He pushed his bangs out from in front of his left eye. "The names Skylar." He said. His accent was vaguely familiar but I couldn't tell where I'd heard it before. He walked past me, but turned and asked. "You don't happen to know a guy named Nikolai Spire, do you?" I didn't hesitate and told him. "You mean Niko. Yeah I know him." Skylar smirked. "Can you tell him a old friend is waiting for him here and don't tell him my name." I thought this was a bit suspicious, but I decided to tell Niko who was looking for him. I nodded and began looking for Niko. I started my search in the dining car. As I looked around all the train cars and still couldn't find Niko. Not until I got to the sleeping car. I had been searching through most of the main train cars and that's where I found Niko, but he wasn't alone. Lying on a cot was Niko and..... Weiss. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Niko and Weiss were cuddling on a cot and Niko wasn't wearing his hat, reviling cat ears on his head. It felt like my brain was malfunctioning. Niko is faunas and him and Weiss were a couple. I tried to back away to try and make sense of everything when I stepped on a loose floorboard. The floor squeaked and Niko looked up at me. He moved Weiss off of him slowly, trying not to wake her. Niko asked me what I wanted. "Some guy was looking for you." Niko's good mood began to fade. "Did he tell you his name." I thought for a moment and said. "He told me his name was Skylar." Niko turned pale. He pushed past me and began to run back the way I came.

After a while Niko had a huge lead on me, but I didn't stop running. I managed to catch up to Niko and ended up getting there in time to see Skylar twisting Niko's arm behind his back and pinning him against the wall. I was about to rush to help him when I was knocked over by a shockwave. Skylar released Niko, who collapsed and his body and clothes were steaming. Skylar vanished and I went to see if Niko was still breathing, fortunately he was, but unfortunately the others came running soon after Skylar disappeared. Ruby asked. "What happened? Is Niko alright?" I said. "Well he's breathing, so that's a good sign." They seemed to ignore Niko's faunas ears which seemed easy to do, considering what happened.Niko began to open his eyes and he looked around confused. But his eyes weren't like they were before. His iris was still gray, but his pupil and a ring around his iris were a vampiric red and over his pupil there was a black four point star. He asked me. "What happened?"

I told him. "Skylar grabbed you and then there was a shockwave and now your eyes are different." Niko pulled out a switchblade from a small pocket on the side of his pants, opening it and using the reflective side of the blade to see what had meant. As soon as he got a good look, he closed the blade and closed his eyes. His breathing was shaky and he seemed to be depressed now. "Niko what's wrong?" Ruby asked,truly concerned with Niko. He began to talk to himself. "Now she's going to leave me, fan-fucking-tastic." Niko stood up and began to walk away. I rushed after his, in hope I could cheer him up. As I got close to him, he turned around and pushed me away from him. "Leave me alone." He said. I would have tried again if not for Blake telling me. "Just give him time to calm down. All you'd accomplish by talking to him now is a broken nose." I knew she was right, but I followed anyway.

Niko went to the sparring car and was fighting against Beowolf looking robots. He used his sword, slicing through the metal like a hot knife through butter. I couldn't understand how a simple blade could do that much damage. The next thing I know is Niko is right next to me and he looked pretty angry, yet depressed. "Niko I...." He cut me off. "Don't apologize, there is nothing to apologize for." Niko said, he sat down on the floor. "Are you ok?" I asked him. He didn't answer me, but he took his jacket and gloves off. For the first time, I've seen Niko without his gloves. He had ring like tattoos on his fingers. On his index fingers, it was a square ring with a black diagonal line through it. For his middle fingers it was a similar tattoo with a cross and a spade in the corners of the square. The next two tattoos were solid black, the only difference was that the second one had a white X through it. The tattoo on his pinky was a diamond that was diagonally black and white. There also was a tattoo on the top of his hands, the left side had five black dots, like what you'd see on a die. On his right hand was the symbol for Weiss.

"How long have you had that one." I pointed at Weiss's symbol. Niko was hesitant to answer. "A year." The answer I was expecting was a few weeks, maybe a month, but a year.... "Not what you were expecting?" Niko said, it's as if he could read my mind. "If your wondering if I can read minds, no I can't, but I can read emotions." I asked him. "So why would Skylar attack you and knock you out like that?" Niko sighed. "His objective wasn't to attack me, it was to active my powers." I looked at him skeptically. "What?" He asked me. "Why are you staring at me?" I chuckled. "Yeah right. Your trying to play off getting your ass kicked." Niko vaulted over the railing, back into the training pit. A single robot charged and Niko took off his sword belt and dropped it at his feet. This was insane, he's going to get himself killed. I was about to rush down there and help when Niko threw a punch at the robots face. His fist had a trail of what looked like smoke and embers. With each hit Niko made the robots head cave in a little bit. Niko kicked the robot and sent it skidding across the floor. To finish it off, Niko fired off a smoke shot which caused the robot to explode. Niko climbed back over the railing. "That's what he did to me." His hand had smoke coming off of it. "I am so confused." I said.

Niko explained how every dusk has a powerful ability locked away in their DNA and another dusk can use their power to activate the DNA, but these powers give dusks control over an unique material, in his case it was smoke, that the user could use that material for anything within the boundaries of that material. "So that means, I have that DNA in me too?" I asked. Niko sighed. "Yes. All dusks have it." I got excited, careful not to show it. "So why not give me my powers." I said. Niko simply said. "I'll give them to you when you need them." With that he walked away.
