Outside, Alisha dismounted Tailgate, while Dave's crew branded the calves, prepared the horses for the ferrier, and let them out into the pen with some hay stacks for feeding. Alisha made her way toward the house while thinking the worst.

"They didn't even watch me finish. How freakin' rude," she mumbled to herself.

She didn't know whether to raise hell or cry, but she decided to hear them out first. Following her to the house were two gorgeous and friendly blue heelers.

She knocked on the side door, and was welcomed in. There in the kitchen were Dave and James, as if they were expecting her.

"So what's the verdict?" she asked.

"Have a seat please," Dave said.

As soon as she sat down, she began shaking her knee, but that was stopped when Dave handed her a glass of sweet tea. That had to be it. She knew she didn't get the job. Her favorite drink was merely a comfort for the oncoming pain.

"Thank you. Why did you guys come in so soon?" she asked.

"Well, we didn't need to see anymore to be honest," Dave told her.

"Did I suck that bad?" she asked.

"Uhh...." James started.

"I got this, James. You didn't suck....you did an excellent job breaking Tailgate, and anyone who break a horse can work cattle I assume."

"I never said I can work cattle, but like you said, anyone who can break a horse probably can anyway, at least with some training. I learn fast," she said in defense.

"Right. That's not a problem," Dave responded.

"Then what?" she asked, implying there had to be a reason why they had come to a decision already.

"Here's the deal. I want to hire you. You are definitely good enough, but I don't know what to do if I hire you. I can't put you in the bunkhouse with a bunch of sex-deprived men who can't control their urges."

Alisha was pissed.

"So, that's the issue? Your horny-ass friends can't act like adults, so you're not going to hire me? Well, sir, I'll just take what's left of my dignity and go back to my motel. Sorry for wasting your time!" she said with attitude, then stood up from her chair to leave.

"Will you sit the fuck down, please! I'm not finished," Dave commanded her.

James had never heard Dave curse like that before, and Alisha wasn't going to take it.

"I'm not in the mood to hear any more of your bullshit!" she yelled back to him.

Even Alisha felt like she had gone a little overboard. Dave was fuming. Not one of his guys had ever raised their voices and talked to him like that before, but then again, she wasn't working for him.

"Miss Duncan, I mean Alisha, I think you owe boss an apology. Look, I see what those guys are thinking out there. Dave is simply trying to protect you from them."

Alisha calmed down, but she didn't sit back in the chair.

"That's fine and dandy, but if you can't control them, then maybe they shouldn't be here."
