Back at the motel, Alisha was pacing her room while on the phone with her sister, Kelly, who could pass for her twin, despite an eight year age gap and having light brown hair.
"I can't believe that prick, Mr. Martin, is acting like there's nothing wrong," Alisha complained to her.
"Boys will be boys, Alisha. Just calm down," her sister replied while trying to put her at ease.
It didn't work as the tears began flowing from Alisha.
"You don't understand, Kelly. He said I was good enough, but that he wasn't sure he could control the guys."
"Did he really say that?"
"Pretty much, yes. I busted my ass and aced everything they wanted."
"But did he say he couldn't hire you?" Kelly asked.
"Well, no, but just the fact that he may not because of something I can't do anything about is bullshit," Alisha responded.
"I agree, but look on the bright side. Imagine they didn't want to hire you because you weren't pretty enough."
Alisha was silent.
"I mean, he hasn't rejected you yet. Just wait for his call. You never know," her sister told her.
"Well, he's doing a background check too. But I'm 18! What background could I have? I just want a job working with the horses."
"You said he had kids, right? Then a background check is just routine, even for your age. Don't be insulted by that, little sis," Kelly told her.
"I know, but I actually want this job despite the way I've been treated."
"I hear ya, but it sounds like he wants you to be safe there. Sounds like a good opportunity with a good boss, to be honest."
Alisha started to feel a little better. Kelly was always very logical and practical.
"True. I appreciate you hearing me out," Alisha told her.
"No problem. I got to run, but keep me posted," Kelly mentioned, and then hung up.
Alisha tried to stay positive through her downtime. She turned on the radio just when one of her favorite songs came on by Clay Walker. She lied down to listen when there was a knock on her door. Alisha ignored it at first, thinking it may have been a couple doors down. Then she heard the banging knock again. She hated to interrupt the song.
"Who is it?!" Alisha yelled over some of her favorite lyrics.
Outside her door, there he was. It was Dave, wearing his same cowboy getup with his thumbs hooked on his belt straps. His crew was right behind him.
"It's Dave, Alisha. Can we come in and talk?" he said looking at the ground.
Alisha was more surprised by what he said than by him even being there.
"We? We who?" she asked, feeling like there was no way she'd invite his crew into her hotel room.
Dave could feel the vibe in her voice. So, he turned to his guys and told them to stay outside.
"I think it's best you guys stay out here. Sorry to dampen your hopes," he said jokingly.
"What?" Alisha asked from behind the door.
