Dave's confession hit Alisha like a ton of bricks, but it made her feel even more comfortable working for him. It was almost pleasant to know someone else out there had struggles that related to some of her passions, as much as she didn't like to see her new boss suffering from it. If anything, there was a newfound respect, and that eased any further admissions Dave had left in the conversation.
"She didn't want any part of the ranch, and gave me full custody of the kids, which was a relief, sadly," Dave mentioned.
Perhaps that was the consolation prize to this entire madness.
"She told the judge that she wanted her parental rights extinguished, effective immediately. The judge granted her the request. That was nearly two years ago."
Alisha's emotions overflowed and she couldn't stop them. James brought her some tissues just in time to catch the avalanche of tears. Dave saw it as a good time to continue.
"About a year later, the nanny quit. No big loss. She was hardly useful with the kids. Then I hired a 21 year old from the city. She did her job and nothing more. She made sure the kids were clean and fed, and that's it. But I came home one night to a huge party that I apparently wasn't allowed into because she told all of her friends she owned the house. I fired her immediately and spoiled her big night. I hired another 21 year old after that. She took care of the kids' needs, but never played with them and was a slob. I was constantly cleaning up after her. So, one night, I had to make an overnight drive to pick up a bull, and one of the guys called me at 2 am to tell me another party was going on. I gave James permission to fire her ass and had my crew kick everyone out. Unfortunately, we paid the price. The place stunk of an overpowering stench of alcohol, cigarettes, and pot. All my liquor downstairs was drank or stolen, and the basement was trashed. Babysitters number three and four were both part timers, and apparently knew each other, because they both had the same tactics. One would lock the kids up in their rooms with food and water, and then meet the other at the mall. I don't know the extensive details, but luckily, they were only around for a week before I fired both of them. Number five was at least original. She gave the kids attention, but never cooked for us. One night, I was exhausted after helping birth eight calves and chasing down my prized bull. All I wanted was a hot shower and to go to sleep. I walked into my room and found my sitter having sex with two other guys on my bed. I was so furious, but was too tired to scream bloody murder. So I waited in the living room for them to finish their business. They came down, and she tried apologizing and some shit about not wanting to mess her sheets. I told her in the most mild way possible to go fuck around someone else's place from now on. I made sure she never came back."
"What the hell...." Alisha responded to that particular story, while still drying her leftover tears.
"Yeah, and it goes on. The sixth sitter was the one who beat Dave Jr. for spilling his milk. She was abusive to Liliana too, but specifically lil' Dave. He's such a tense little toddler now because of that experience, and he has nightmares occasionally. I had the bitch arrested, and frankly, I felt like it was rock-bottom at that point. I know this is rough to hear, Alisha, but you know, I have somehow managed to still function. If the kids were a little older and could grasp the situation fully, it would have torn me for good. Liliana knows what's going on, but at least Dave Jr. doesn't. Unfortunately, he paid the price with that damn sitter. Since then, my parents have stepped in, and have taken the kids for weeks here and there, with a week in between where I take care of them, and the guys have had to pick up the slack on the ranch. We fell behind on some things, and here I am now, with lucky sitter number seven," he said with a half-smile.
