Ruth and Curt continued their rendezvous over the new girl in town, sharing their opinion on the lucky find for Dave. However, with Ruth being aware of Dave's past, he knew there were a ton more hoops for Alisha to jump through to last, even as an employee.
"Curt, you know Dave. He doesn't trust females other than the three in his family."
"You too, Ruth. He trusts you," Curt said to correct her.
"True. So, we know he has his guard up, and is even a bit rude to her at times."
"Right, but this girl looks and acts differently than the others," Curt told her.
"I know, but he isn't dating her or anything. She's just going to work for him for now, but to be honest, I hope something more develops."
"You sure would. You're such a romantic, Ruth. Always have been. But let me ask you, how old is this girl?" Curt asked.
"She's young. Just turned 18 a few months ago," Ruth said with a cringe.
"Oh? She's barely an adult, but you wouldn't know it with the way she carries herself. She's more mature than her age says. Plus how many 18 year olds have that kind of money to blow on toys for someone else's kids?" he asked.
"She told me it's one of her savings accounts that she's been building since she was 13. She said she'd save half and give the other half to her folks for rent. She's a giver. I got perfume to prove it too. But I may give it back."
"Nah! Keep it. Givers like it when keepers keep and appreciate," Curt reassured her.
"Maybe you're right. Sweet girl, I tell ya."
"Well, I hope it all works out for her, and Dave as well."
Ruth was in full agreement. And why wouldn't she be? She was like a second mother to him, and a real friend. She wanted what was best for him.
"Here comes your shopping buddy, Ruth, and with an even bigger load too."
They watched Alisha approach.
"Find everything you needed, Miss Alisha?" Curt asked.
"Sure did. Thank you for your help. I will definitely be back soon."
"You are very welcome. Thank you for your business. You too, Ruth," he said with a smile.
Both of them went to checkout with Alisha going first. Ruth couldn't help but notice her balance came to a whopping $416.38.
"Dear goodness, Alisha. You need to give that receipt to Dave so he can reimburse you," Ruth told her.
"I'm not going to do that," Alisha answered.
"And why not?"
"Because it's my food too, and he didn't ask for me to go shopping for them, so this is all on me."
"You're too good for your own good," Ruth said softly, but emphatically.
She checked out, and the both of them finished their shopping trip.
Back at the ranch, Dave's cell phone rang. It was Curt, and like any friend, he had some things to ask Dave. Not only was he surprised to learn Alisha had gone grocery shopping for them, but Curt left out no other details.
"Oh yeah. Nine t-bone steaks, nine butterfly pork-chops, and five pounds of my best ground sirloin."
Dave's mouth watered. The food sounded good, but the idea of Alisha burning her own money for his crew and kids came off as uneasy, but he knew it could be a lot worse. Curt continued asking him how she had come onto the scene. He didn't realize that within 18 hours, Dave had not only met Alisha, but interviewed her and hired her. It was no wonder that Curt had no idea. To go with it, learning that Alisha could break horses better than some of his crew had Curt completely on board with Ruth's prediction. Maybe Alisha and Dave were meant to meet....or maybe Dave was meant to finally get that sitter that could do a little of everything, and offer a little of everything too. Despite the idea, Dave made it clear to Curt that Alisha was just an employee, and that he refused to be hurt by another woman like he was with Amanda and the psycho-sitter that still gives Dave Jr nightmares.
