Night passed without an issue. The boys awoke to the smell of bacon frying. This time, James was cooking. All of them were just glad that yesterday was over. They went to awaken Dave, only to find him still in the bed with Alisha, holding her close.
Just as they exited, Dave awoke. It was like he knew they were in there.
"Is the work done outside?" he whispered loudly, so to not awake Alisha.
"Yeah, boss, all done. I'm cooking breakfast for us, too. Oh, and the painters are here. I let them in to begin painting the kids' rooms if that's okay," James mentioned as the others left.
"You deserve a raise," Dave replied quietly.
"Nah, boss, this is how we help each other, plus your responsibility is taking care of Alisha."
"Thank you, James," Dave said, just as he slipped out of bed to grab a pair of jeans and a flannel shirt out of his drawer. He began changing.
"So, was it a smooth night?" James asked.
"Yeah, she didn't wake up again."
"You laid with her all night, too?"
Dave gave him a look.
"Yeah, doctor's orders, remember?"
"Yeah, boss. I'm just playing."
Dave walked by him and into the bathroom to brush his teeth.
"Well, I'm not playin.' It's my fault this all happened. It could have been prevented if I wasn't such a prick."
"C'mon, boss. Life is full of questions and obstacles that force us to make decisions. Some of them we regret. This is one of those. But you can't dwell on it, because that solves nothing. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and try a better way. All you can do now is make sure that Alisha gets the care and support she needs, and then she'll be back on her feet in no time."
Dave couldn't disagree.
"You're right, James.
"Always am," he responded confidently.
"Can you put Alisha's bag by my bed, so she has her stuff when she wakes up?" Dave asked of him, as he completed his brushing.
"Sure."
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Dave looked at his watch.
"Shit. It's the doc."
"I'll let him in, boss," James offered.
Dave rushed to comb his hair and slip on his socks and boots to greet the doctor.
"Hello, Mr. Martin, so how did the night go?"
"Perfect. She didn't wake up once after we called you."
"Works every time," the doc replied.
"Hey, boss, Alisha's bag is by the bed. I'll be in the kitchen fixing breakfast for us, so Alisha can eat afterwards. Call for me if you need me," James said, then walked away.
Dave thanked him, and the doc was prepared.
"Alright. Ready to dress those stitches?"
"Yes. We'll have to wake her up first," Dave mentioned.
The doctor followed him in.
"Alisha, Alisha, can you wake up, sweetie?" Dave urged.
Alisha awoke to the last word, wondering who was calling her 'sweetie.'
