I tap my pencil against the desk trying to focus on my task at hand: learning Korean. While speaking in Korean is not too difficult for me, I want to practice reading and writing in the language.

As I'm about to finish the sentence I was writing, I notice the song flowing through my ears. The chorus sounds amazing, but I can't recognize the artist. Supposedly listening to songs that you don't know the lyrics to helps with focus, but it looks like that doesn't work for me.

I press the home button on my phone to see the song.

Typing "Hellevator Stray Kids" into my YouTube search bar, I wait for the videos to load and click on the music video. I have heard of many K-Pop groups before, but these guys aren't one of them. The video and music seem so well put together, so I can't imagine why they wouldn't be more well known.

I take my laptop in my hands and push away the paper I was practicing Korean on, getting up to walk over to Riley and Suwei who were watching some show.

"Have either of you heard of Hellevator by Stray Kids?"

They both shake their heads to signal that they haven't, so I play the video for them.

"They are really good, and that rapper's voice is so cool," Riley comments.

Suwei watches the chorus attentively, "And they're great dancers. I want to know who choreographed that."

"Right," I agree, "I was listening to recommended music, and that song came up. You think they produced it themselves?"

"Maybe," Suwei says, "What company does it say they're from?"

I scroll down to the description of the video and then read some comments, "JYP Entertainment. I guess they're a new group."

Riley pauses, "Wait, like the JYPE we were just at the other day?"

Remembering the video we just watched, I grow nervous, "If that's the type of talent they expect at JYPE, do we have a chance to make it past those auditions?"

"I'm not sure, but let's be optimistic," Suwei replies.

"How are you liking Korea so far?" Yugyeom questions us as we look at the city from Namsan Seoul Tower.

"We love it. This city is beautiful," Suwei answers for the three of us.

Jackson nudges me and Riley, "Even better than California, right?"

Riley glances out the glass window and jokingly replies, "I'm not so sure about that."

"California always wins," Mark laughs, giving Riley a high-five.

I quietly take photos of the city as the rest talk amongst themselves.

"Does Seoul look very different from California?" a voice beside me asks.

I turn to see Jaebum and tell him, "Yeah, in some ways. Personally, I think Seoul looks prettier at night than Los Angeles."

He smiles, "This city is really nice, but going to other places is more interesting."

"Definitely. There are so many places I want to visit one day, but I'm not sure that I'll be able to."

"Maybe one day you will, and you better send me lots of photos if you do."

"Of course," I laugh, returning to look at the vibrant city lights against the dim stars in the purple night sky.
