After the rattling of the door stopped, Christina slowly stepped towards it to see if the creature was gone.
Tom quickly grasped her arm, pulling her back a little, "wait, what if it's still there and it tries to attack you?"
Christina then looked over to the corner of the den, picking up shotgun and holding it tight in her cold hands, "if it does, I'll be ready."
Christina then proceeded to the door, slowly gripping the knob and beginning to open it, peaking outside. She looked to both sides of the doorway, making sure there were no infected creatures waiting to strike. When she knew it was clear, she motioned for Tom to grab a smaller gun from the wooden table in the very back of the den. He did so, feeling a bit nervous at the feeling of a gun in his hand. He slowly made his way over to Christina, staying behind her.
"Stay close behind me, and stay alert," Christina instructed before quickly dashing out of the den and along the rocky walls.
"Where are we going?" Tom whispered.
"We're getting food," Christina answered in the same tone, giving Tom a quick glance then looking forward again.
Ahead of them was oddly shaped flight of stairs, leading all the way down to a big opening with a body of water surrounding it. The cave walls hovered over it and vines and moss stretched along the walls and corners. The water appeared to be black which made Tom gag a little. If you looked closely, you could see unusual creatures slithering through the thick, disgusting water like snakes or a gigantic crocodile. The rocky opening took up most of the space and had a big tree trunk in the middle. It stood like a table and it seemed to be a pile of something red and gooey sitting on top of it.
Christina quickly sprinted down to it, Tom following slowly behind her.
"Jackpot," Christina mumbled, looking at what appeared to be some kind of meal on the trunk, except it wasn't.
When Tom got closer, he seen the pile was full of human organs, intestines, kidneys, and other disgusting things. It reeked of death and smelt as if it was freshly ripped from a body.
Blood flowed from the mess and down the tree trunk, causing a bigger mess.
Christina then pulled a plastic bag from her pocket, leaving Tom wondering where she got it from, as he didn't see her pick it up before they left the den.
She handed it to Tom, looking around the rest of the opening, "Put that in the bag while I go look for more."
Tom tried his hardest not to gag, "Is everyone cannibals around here?"
"Mostly. Others find and eat fresh vines and leaves from the river on the other side of the city, they're the vegetarians," Christina answered, noticing Tom's discomfort and disgust.
Christina then left Tom to pack their meal, wandering off into the darkness to find more.
Tom reached for the gooey junk, grabbing a handful and forcing himself not to puke right then and there. Blood dripped down his wrist and arms, and the meat of the organs squished in between his fingers.
He dropped it into the bag, sighing and reaching for another handful. Once he was finished, he tied the bag and looked around for Christina.
It had got quiet, and she seemed to have wandered off a little too far.
"Christina?" Tom called out.
He got no response.
He called for her again and once again, didn't get a response.
He began to walk in the same direction Christina did when he felt a hard, metal object hit him over the head. He collapsed, groaning in pain. He turned over to look over at his attacker, but his vision became blurry and he couldn't tell who stood over him.
After rapidly blinking a few times, he seen his attacker was Nicki.
"Nice to see you again, Tommy. Last time I got the chance to kill you, your annoying little girlfriend got in the way," Nicki giggled evilly.
Tom quickly scooted away on his hands and feet, but Nicki was faster and gripped his ankle tightly, snatching him back over to her.
"You can't get away from me now," Nicki hissed, revealing her disturbingly long teeth and tounge. Her eyes turned white and her skin grew gray and dead. Her hands appeared as if they belonged to a werewolf as well as the rest of her. She growled demonically, hovering over Tom even more.
She was about to pounce when a loud, abrupt gun shot tore through the silence as well as a demented cry. Nicki fell to the ground, blood squirting out of her wound. Christina appeared from the darkness, rushing over to Tom and helping him to his feet.
"Are you okay? Did she bite you?" Christina queried worriedly.
"Yes, I'm fine. Was she... infected?" Tom uttered. Christina nodded. She had another plastic bag in her hand that was drenched in blood as well as her hands. The bag appeared to be filled with bloody treats that Tom was sure Christina couldn't wait to feast on. She reminded him of Zendaya...
"Let's get back before more come, our guns only have so many bullets," Christina suggested, beginning towards the flight of stairs with Tom following shortly behind her.
