Ryan was excited.
He's been imaging and planning on how to come about with this idea of marrying the love of his life. About how they can spend their entire lives together, maybe grow old together.
He wanted to build a home with Shane, and only him.
With memories happily filling his head, he fiddled with the box that would their life forever. Gazing at the ring made him terrified a little, because the idea of him getting married at all never occured to him. At least not until he met Shane.
Ryan and Shane's love story started back when they were seven, being best friends on the first day was memorable for the couple. They were close, and they had a sweet innocent tradition where they'd give each other flowers; roses to be exact. Neither of them not knowing what it truly meant. They did that every year, even now. The moment they realized the true meaning, they cried and told their parents. Little did they know, they were young and in love.
"But, Mommy, I don't understand. I don't love Shane. He's only my friend," Ryan cried out, his brown eyes quickly filling up with tears.
"Oh, Ry." His mother sighed, looking down at the kid, slightly smiling. She messily scruffed his hair and said, "You'll understand when you're older. For now, take care of yourself."
And as for Shane.
"Mom. I don't love Ryan, do I?"
"That's not really for me to decide, my love. You can love who you want to love. I won't be surprised if you do, though, I've seen how the both of you look at each other."
"Mom! That's not helping."
"I'm sorry, Shane. Besides, you shouldn't be thinking about this now, you're only nine for goodness' sake." His mother said, walking away from the boy.
And it was almost like they were missing puzzles that got pieced together by the universe. Or maybe, like the Red String.
Ryan was a huge romantic.
The boy wanted this proposal to be everything that they've ever dreamed of. Fairy lights was scattered perfectly around the room, and plates and cutlery was placed on the table according to how Ryan liked it. Straight, and smart. Not like himself at all.
With everything wonderfully into place, the younger man sat on the chair, waiting for his lover to come home.
Shane wasn't having the best of day. The lie he has been keeping is eating him alive. His stomach growling with anger as it tells the man to confront his lover about it, but Shane couldn't pick up the courage to do so. He knew he didn't deserve the shorter man after everything he has done for him. But he can't. He couldn't.
The taller man knew he shouldn't have done it. He knew he shouldn't have replied to the girl. His mind and heart was racing at the fact that Ryan was going to freak out. The smile that was always there would turn into a permanent frown. And he couldn't break Ryan's heart, but he knew he should've told him sooner.
With each step he took, he could mentally hear his mind shout at him to tell Ryan. Shane's eyes watered with new sets of tears as he walked home.
He couldn't.
The memory of him and Ryan having a late night picnic under the brightly lit stars played vividly in his mind. He remembered it as being the happiest he's ever been. He remembers the smiles, laughters, cuddles, dances that took place on that day. It was just a day of them getting to know each other more, revealing secrets that the other person did not know.
