Life returned to its normal routine, which meant nights spent at the bar at Cielo making drinks and watching Martin (who had recently got a girlfriend and texted her nonstop) fumble with the liquor and whiskey bottles.
"So," I said, smiling and leaning back against the counter when there was a lull in people wanting a drink. "Who's the lucky girl?"
He blushed, almost spilling a martini on himself. "Why do you care so much?"
I held in my laughter. "I was just wondering. You're always texting her, so she must be pretty damn important if she's a higher priority than your job."
He slid the martini over to the man sitting at the bar, then turned back to me. "You're one to talk. That Porter guy comes here almost every day and talks to you for like an hour."
Now it was my turn to blush. "Excuse you. Porter and I are just friends."
He snickered, pulling a glass of vodka out of a cabinet. "Yeah, okay. Next time he comes in here try not to look at him so desperately then."
My mouth fell open. "I don't look at him desperately at all. You're the one to talk, always looking at your phone and shit."
Martin rolled his eyes, turning around to face me. "You're the desperate one -"
"Um, excuse me? Martin?"
Both of us flipped around to face the source of the high-pitched voice interrupting us from our argument.
A tiny girl was standing there, with blonde hair and red cheeks as she stared back at us. I recognized her as the girl who was here a couple of weeks back, who Martin had aimlessly flirted with until I poked fun at him and he sent me off to meet up with Porter. We looked at her until she coughed and played with the ends of her skirt. "Did I interrupt something?"
"Looks like I'm off shift." Martin said, throwing off his uniform and sliding out from the bar. He walked over to the girl and she looked anxiously back at me.
I glanced at the clock on the wall. "Martin!" I called. "You still have another ten minutes."He waved me off, walking with the girl out towards the exit doors. "No ones here anyways." Then he disappeared, leaving me in a state of curiosity.
I guess we'll find out what happens between the two of them.
Later, after my shift ended around 11 that night, I wiped all the counters down and made sure the bar was clean before leaving. Porter wanted to meet me at his place, so I decided to make my way over there.
To my surprise, he was standing outside Cielo, his hands in his pockets. Looking around nervously, he wore the expression of a scared kid at night. There was no one around him, and he stood underneath the brightest streetlight on the entire street.
I smiled, trying hard not to scare him as I stepped up beside him. "Hey, you."
He jumped, and I giggled as he looked at me terrified.
"Someone's a little on edge tonight." I said, leaning into his side. He wrapped his arms around me and I fell into his soft t-shirt, his warm embrace all I wanted. He sighed in content, running his fingers through my hair. It sent shivers down my spine and butterflies in my stomach and I refused to pull away from him.
