Chapter 3
Will worked hard, as he needed to do something to pay her back for saving his life. He might seem not very interested in someone else's feelings or paying back Elisa, but deep down inside he was. He just didn't show it, because showing affection is weak, and people will take advantage of you. Like Elisa. Elisa definitely showed that she cared for him -though she could care a little bit more for him according to himself-. If he would have been an advantage-taker, he wouldn't have tried to pay her back. Of course, paying back someone who saved your life was impossible, unless you saved their life as well. Then it was a draw. But right now, he owed Elisa some ten thousand years of helping out in the "garden".
The garden was a plot of land, farmland, with plants on it. It was clear she had spend some time planting all those herbs and flowers. Where was she anyway?
'Hey, everything alright?' She watched him staring at the sea, obviously busy thinking about something. Will blinked a few times, shook his head and faced her.
'Yeah, yeah, everything is alright. So, are you going to show me around the island?' She smiled.
'Sure, come on before the morning is over.' He sprinted and stood next to her.
Together they walked over the island, Elisa pointing at beautiful places and edible plants. She showed him the highest spot, the lowest valley, the rocky cliffs and all of the sandy beach. Will couldn't help but stare at her when he was behind her. She had gorgeous long, blonde hair that was slightly waved. Only the ends were formed in nice long ringlets. It was like gold in the sun, and the curls bounced happily on her back. Her dress was probably very old, it looked worn, a bit dirty and it was a light pink color. '...and here is a cave, I haven't really been in there, because...' She turned around to face the person she was talking to. 'Are you even listening?' Will looked up from his dreamy gaze to meet her stunning blue eyes. They were the color of the sea. Would it be possible for eyecolor to adjust to the environment? 'Hello?' She snapped her fingers in front of his face. 'Wake up! Come back to earth! Or whatever this place is called.'
'I'm present. I was just dreaming away in those pretty blue eyes of yours.'
'Oh please, stop flirting. I'm not falling for it.' He frowned.
'Just how do you know what flirting is when you've lived here since you were like 9 or so?' She rolled her eyes.
'I was 6, and Beau explained me what flirting is.' His eyes turned large. She almost laughed at him.
'Beau could flirt with you? When you were 6?'
'No, of course not. Beau was a 50 years old doctor, and I was 12, Will. 12 years old.'
'So you actually made out with a docotor of 50?' She shook her head.
'I don't know what you mean with "made out", but the answer is probably no as he just told me stories and helped me. He didn't flirt with me like you do. Because then I would have killed him the first night. It's so annoying.'
'First of all; making out is something like kissing, I can show you if you want and...' She shook her head very clearly, her eyes screaming "Never!" Will continued, ignoring this insult; 'And second: why haven't you killed me yet?' Elisa shrugged.
'I didn't feel like it.'
'So you do love me.' Will teased.
'No, maybe I like you a teeny-tiny little bit. As a friend. But I am way too young to fall in love.' She turned around. Will followed.
'So you do like me, if I tell you that people our age fall in love all the time?' She looked back over her shoulder.
'No, I do not.' She answered with her polite British accent. He sighed.
'So where are we going right now?'
'I am going swimming, you can join if you want, but it's already past 3 o' clock, so you might want to get something to eat.' Will considered her offer, but he didn't know his way around the island that well, so joined her.
'Do you think they are coming to get me, take me away from here?' Will asked. Elisa hesitated. Should she tell him?
'Well... I do not think you want to know.'
'Why not? I am older than you are, I am stronger, mentally and physically, and I...'
'And I cried for weeks when I realised I was alone and no one was coming to get me. No one can not be sad if you suddenly realise that you're gonna be stuck forever, far away from everyone else.' He had to agree with her.
'So why couldn't they get you?' She bit her lip.
'I've wondered for so long, but I will never find out. I assume that there is some kind of small stream leading to this island, while all the other streams next to it go other ways. Or we passed through points where only humans could go and boats were too large. Honestly, Will. I've been wandering over the beach for three weeks, only leaving it to pick fruit. Not once did I see a ship, not even far, far away. I've made large fires to get attention, I've screamed my lungs out of my body, I climbed in the largest tree on the highest point. I tried to swim as far as I could, build dozens of boats and rafts. Beau and I even tried the message-in-a-bottle technique. Nothing ever worked, nothing ever helped, Will. We're stuck. All you can do is adjust and live with it.' He suddenly pitied her. She was hard on the outside, shutting him out, but on the inside she was scarred. She was broken, torn apart, whatever it was they called it. He hugged her. Elisa didn't push him away this time. She leaned against his warm chest and held on to his arms strongly. He could feel a tears fall on his arm.
She hated herself. No showing weaknesses to others had been a very important rule for her ever since Beau left. She jumped in the water, swimming towards the waterfall. She let it hit her shoulders.
'So how did you get on this island?' Will asked her, coming closer through the water. He had taken his trousers of, and was swimming in his underpants. She, however, was still wearing her dress. She sat on a rock in the water.
'Why do you wanna know?' He shrugged.
'You know how I got here. I'm just curious.' She looked away.
'Maybe I don't want to tell.'
'Please?' He begged, playing with her small feet.
'It hurts you know.' He took his hands away.
'Sorry, I didn't know you have such sensible feet.' He apologized. She laughed. 'What?'
'I was talking about telling about my family. That hurts. I do not have sensible feet!' He laughed as well.
'Will you ever tell me?' She looked in his begging eyes. They were like puppy-eyes. So sweet and pleading. His brown eyes were like molten chocolate.
'No. I will not.'
