Chapter 6
Elisa went over to the cliff again. She had spent the past three days worrying about Will. Painting used to help make her feel better, but it's magic didn't work anymore. She had expected him back after a day alone, but he was even more stubborn that she thought. Secretly, Elisa hoped he had made himself a nice home, that he had found a good place to survive. Nevertheless, another voice in her head told her she should have stopped him. 'He is probably dead already, don't worry about it anymore.' Did the voice say. Another, sweet voice in her head told her: 'Don't worry my dear Elisa, he is somewhere on this island building a hut. He is glad for the freedom he has.' Even though they both told her to stop worrying, she couldn't. Will had been a tiny sparkle of hope. He was freshness, he was the only thing on this island that had been on the mainland in since she came. And, if she forgot his headstrong mind and mistrusting remarks, he was good company.
'Speaking of the devil.' She whispered with her eyes wide opened. 'Damn, Will, what did you do?' She asked the motionless figure sitting against a tree near the cliff. She grabbed his wrist, feeling his heart rate. He was still alive. Just like when she found him, she lifted him on her shoulder and walked to her hut.
Will's eyes were closed and he lay still motionless on the bed. She put some water on his wounds and patted them clean with a piece of her dress she had ripped off a long time ago. She didn't fit her dress anymore, which was why she had torn it apart and wrapped it around her like a towel. The pieces that were left she used for this kind of things, and she had made herself underpants out of it. Too bad this was one of the last pieces, as a lot were worn and the largest pieces were tied around Will's arm and back. She removed his pants, even though she actually didn't want to, and patted the wound on his lower leg.
'How long have you been sitting there? Why didn't you just come back? I can't believe you would rather die than admit you wanted to come back. I would have appreciated it if you came back you know. I would not tell you I-told-you-so, Will. Why are you so stubborn?' Elisa softly whispered to him. She knew he probably didn't hear her, but it didn't matter. She didn't want answers, she just wanted to ask. She ripped a piece of her dress and tied it tight around his leg. He frowned a bit at the contact with his wound. She sighed. 'Alright, I think it's okay like...' Will cringed suddenly. 'What's the matter? Too tight?' She bend over his legs too adjust the bandage. He cried out in pain as she bend over. She hadn't even touched him yet. His eyes shot open and tears formed. 'What is wrong, Will?' Elisa asked, a bit frightened.
'My leg...' Ha-ha. Even in this state he could make jokes. She knew his leg hurt, duh. Elisa bend over again. 'No not my lower leg.' He managed to whisper. Drops of sweat formed on his forehead. She bend back and looked at his legs. A red swelling was all she could find beside the wound. She softly pressed it with her cold fingers.
'Does this...'
'Aargh fuck you Elisa!' She had no idea what that meant, but it sounded like it hurt. A lot. Her mind went over all the things Beau had told her about health.
'Did something sting you?' Will faced her, his face wet. He thought about it.
'Maybe on the first night.' He answered with a hoarse voice. She ran outside.
Damn you Will, damn you. Was all she thought when she ran to the other side of the island. How could he almost die of pain for two days and not call for her. Surely he must have noticed that she was near the cliff a lot. She grabbed some moss and a coconut and ran back. Beau had told her that if she got stung by something, she should soak some of this moss in coconut milk and put it on the spot. She had never been stung, as she didn't climb in the trees the dangerous insects liked. Most of the insects didn't like stinging, Beau had explained. She had already figured that out by then though. She had always been cautious on the island with everything she touched. She had watched birds and and animals on the land to see what they ate. This way she knew what was edible. She had observed trees and plants to see what was surrounding it and if it was dangerous. And then Will came, running around in the jungle, climbing trees and do everything she hadn't done when she first came here. He must have felt very immortal. She smashed the coconut on a stone so she could put the moss in, pushing it down with two small branches. She lifted it out with the sticks and put it softly on the spot. Will winced, but kept his eyes closed. She ripped another part of her dress, making it more like a top than a dress. Luckily her dress was fairly clean because she swam every day. She had also recently washed her dress with hot water, so the germs died.
She wound it around his upper leg, pressing the moss on the red swelling. He winced again, and tears formed for the second time. She got some fruit from outside, put it next to his bed and whispered; 'If you need anything, just let me know.'
