"I don't think you fully understand my offer," I say, sitting in the seat across from Peter during lunch.
Him and his friend, whose name I learned was Ned, both stopped eating their sandwiches mid-bite simultaneously.
(F/#1/n) and (f/#2/n) sat on the two seats next to me.
"Look, you pretend to be my boyfriend, just until prom nears. Josh will break by then," Peter continues to chew on the bite of sandwich he had taken, listening to my words carefully, "in return I can get you out of the loser rut you are currently stuck in."
My words were harsh but hopefully pushed the right buttons.
"I'm the one who calls them losers," the girl that was sitting with them the other day said, looking up from her book.
"Sorry, Avril, we don't listen to people who use hairstyle ideas from 2005," (f/#2/n) retorts.
Normally I would laugh at something like that but this wasn't the right moment to make fun of people.
I needed them in order for this to work.
"(F/#2/n)! That was obnoxious and unnecessary, like your lipstick smudge," I say sharply.
She instantly covers her mouth.
"What?" She looks over to (f/#1/n) with big eyes.
"Just a little over there," (f/#1/n) tries to point out the smudge for her.
Trying to wipe it away she only makes it worse.
"Now it's worse," (f/#1/n) says.
"Oh my god," (f/#2/n) gets up from the seat to head towards the bathroom.
(F/#1/n) follows in suit.
Once those two are gone I continue with the plan.
My attention sets on miss 2005 herself.
She fiddles with the pages of the book she was reading.
"You got a name?" I ask her.
Her eyes flash up from the book for just a second to meet mine.
"Michelle," she answers, eyes back on the book, "but my friends call me MJ."
I was amused by the idea that she had other friends besides the two nerds sitting in front of me.
"Well, Michelle, give me one good reason why Peter here," I gesture towards him with my hand, "shouldn't pretend to be my boyfriend."
Eyes never leaving the book, she responds easily.
"Because he's Peter and you're (Y/N)," from the corner of my eye I can see Peter slouch down, "you could have picked any guy at school, why him?"
I widen my eyes at her rebuttal question, pleasantly surprised.
"An excellent question," I state.
I tap my nails on the table, turning my head to my next 'interviewee.'
"Ned," his whole facial expression is shock.
"She knows my name," he whispers over towards Peter, without breaking eye contact with me.
A sly smile comes across my face.
"Why do you think I choose Peter?"
Peter shifts uncomfortably in his seat.
Obviously talking about him like he wasn't there was making him antsy.
"Well, uh... be-because you um... maybe uh—" he babbled.
"Peter," I shift my attention, not bothering to let Ned finish, "You've been quiet. Why do you think I choose you?"
I could practically see his brain searching for an appropriate response.
But he, like Ned, was also too nervous to say anything.
I was sure he wasn't going to answer, until he did.
"I don't know, but I don't think I would make a very good boyfriend," he finally says, starting to clean up his stuff.
"You're going to be my pretend boyfriend. That's different," I correct.
He looks down at the table and sighs. "I still don't think I would be able to help you. I'm sorry," his apology out of pity made me sick.
He walked away without another word.
Ned followed close behind, and Michelle wandered off.
I was alone.
My eyes still followed him as he left.
Sometimes people just need a little push in order to get them where you want them to go.

I double checked the address on the paper hoping it was the correct apartment.
The building was a little run down with some of the wallpaper curling or bubbling up.
After one last check I knock on the door.
A minute later an older, yet still beautiful looking, woman answers the door.
Her long straight brown hair was the same color as Peter's.
"Can I help you?" She asks politely with a smile.
"May Parker?" I question. She nods her head.
"Hi, it's nice to meet you. I'm (Y/N), Peter's girlfriend."
