Chapter 5 - Mayday, Situation Overload

Chapter 5 - Mayday, Situation Overload

When the three of them got to the forest where they found Newt, Newt set off and looked for the sketchbook. Angela and Thomas tried their best to keep an eye on him, to keep him from running. They watched as he looked around in intense concentration. They wanted to offer him help but he didn't look like he could hear them.

Newt was praying that the sketchbook wasn't ruined by the rain. Wherever he went when they escaped the Maze, he always had that sketchbook with him. Even when he was with the Cranks. It was the only thing that was grounding him to sanity.

While he was searching for it, he was thinking about the voice. Why would he look for (G/N)? She was dead. The day he saw her running for her life as the Maze doors were closing. He hated that day. He never felt so helpless. He wanted to run to her and get her back in safely. He knew he could do it but he was held back.

When the Maze doors were shut and he and (G/N) were separated by the walls, he didn't know what to do. He didn't know how to live. (G/N) helped him get back on his feet. How could he live when his support was gone?

She left a huge mark in the Maze, everyone missed her.  Her hut wasn't made use for any other Glader, even when they had another girl named Teresa. Many didn't want her old hut to be used, so Newt offered his while he stayed in the hammocks like the other Gladers. He couldn't bring himself to stay the night inside her hut.

Her things weren't touched, except for her Runner's notebook. They needed that for information. The map that she created was a huge help to them. She contributed a lot in order to find the way out. Many believed that she was the one who could lead them to freedom. But it wasn't her. It was a boy named Thomas.

Much to Newt's surprise, he liked Thomas. When Thomas was locked out of the Maze with Minho and Alby, Newt thought that he was going to lose all his sanity. He lost too many of his friends to the Maze. His friends who were always ready to catch him when he falls.

When they came back the next day, Newt couldn't believe it. His friends were back. He and Thomas got closer. He had this strange urge to protect the boy. Protect him the way he couldn't do so to (G/N). He didn't understand why. Maybe it was because he reminded him so much of (G/N). Both were reckless and always wanted to go to the Maze.

The greenies after (G/N)'s disappearance only knew her as the first girl and another Glader who risked her life in search of freedom. No one talked about the relationship she had with Newt since it was Newt's to talk about. Newt didn't like to talk about her to anyone else other than Minho and sometimes Gally.

The first time he opened up about her again was to Thomas. He shared how special she was to him. He told Thomas how much he missed her. The regret he felt when he couldn't pull her out of the Maze. That he couldn't believe that she was truly dead until the Maze doors opened the next day and he saw the dried blood on the floor. He also shared the sketchbook with Thomas.

"Looking for something?"

Newt raised his head and saw a man he's never seen before. He was holding the thing that he was looking for.

"James?" Thomas spoke from behind Newt. "What are you doing here?"

"Waiting for Newt."

"I don't know who you are. What's going on?"
