Past:

The days following his mother's death were hard. Every night he'd wake up with nightmares, and every night there would be no one there to comfort him.

His sister seemed to be rather fine, considering her mom just died in front of her. Caleb was glad she wasn't suffering too much, however he worried for her when she started to act as if nothing ever happened.

Maybe it's just a coping mechanism? He tried telling himself.

It wasn't.

Living with Landon was definitely strange. He was an eight year old and taking care of himself. Eight year olds shouldn't be taking care of themselves, they should be playing outside or sitting in their homes with their parents!

Caleb found it odd how an eight year old tried to boss him, a ten year old, around constantly. He's older than him and should be bossing him around!

Despite how odd he found it, he never said anything. Landon was letting them stay in the abandoned ship he found. The least he could do was keep quiet.

One day, however, when Caleb was seventeen and Scarlet was twelve, Caleb decided he'd had enough of being controlled.

The day started off normal; The three kids woke up, ate breakfast (which Scarlet stole from one of the nearby bakeries), and went on their daily walks.

To say their lives weren't interesting would be an understatement.

Caleb had given some of their food away to a girl who was obviously starving while they were on their walk. He guessed she was about ten, maybe eleven years younger than him. It was kind of hard to tell, though.

"My sister and her friend and I have a building we stay in," He'd tell her. "If you have no place else to stay, maybe you could stay with us? It's far away from here, but I'm sure if we started walking now we'd get there by night. I know it isn't fun to live outside."

"Thank you, but I have to stay here." She replied with an accent that was common around that planet.

He frowned, "Why?"

"My parents, they're coming back for me, one day." She said. "I need to stay here so they're able to find me easily. But I appreciate your offer. Thank you for the food."

"Oh, okay." He said. "Well, we're here almost all the time. So if you ever see us and you change your mind, don't hesitate to come up to us and ask. I'm sure my sister would love to have a friend that's a girl. I think she gets annoyed with living with boys."

She smiled at him, "I've never had a friend before, but I still have to deny. I'm sorry."

For some reason something about her was different.

She reminded him of his little sister when she was younger, and nicer.

Suddenly a voice called for him, and he stood, "Oh, well, I got to get going. Nice talking to you. Hope you enjoyed your food."

"Thanks."

Then he walked away.

That night was when they got in their first of many huge fights.

"Why did I see you give that girl some of our food? You know we can't afford to give that away!" Landon had yelled. "What's wrong with you?! Why would you do such a thing?"

"Because I actually have a heart!" Caleb snapped. "She needed more than us. She was starving!"

"Well so are we!"
