Chapter 21

Melody's pov

"Crap" I said under my breath as I was nuzzled into Dani's side.

"What?" he said.

"I totally forgot to tell Jess that I was leaving" I said, the panic within me rising.

"Oh, um do you have her phone number?" he asked.

"No. God, what am I going to do?"

Jess has been there for me when no one else was. She helped me deal with my mother's rath and Dani's absence. And I just left her with no explanation.

"I've got an idea! Can I borrow your phone?" I asked.

"Yeah I guess" he replied, confusion written all over his face.

"Thanks. I'll be right back" I said and ran a few feet away from where we were sitting on the beach.

I dialed a number into his phone and waited while it rung.

"Hello this is DQ. How can I help you?" the voice of my former co-worker, Steven said.

"Steve it's Melody, I need to talk to Jess"

"Oh hey Melody, you know it's against the rules to use the phone as a social network. Right?"
"I know, but it's urgent. Please, just do me this favor"

"Alright, alright. But only for 5 minutes"

"Thank you, thank you, thank you"

I waited in anticipation while he looked for her in the restaurant.

"Hello" said Jess's familiar, grouchy voice.

"It's me, Melody" I said with a smile on my face.

"Oh hey, how have you been? Good. That's great. Thanks for saying goodbye, by the way" she said sarcastically.

"Jess I'm really-"

"No, save it. I don't want to hear your apology for running away with Dani to LA. Or that you should have told me in advance, but you couldn't. Did you know that I found out because I went to your house and talked to your mom? I get it you don't have a phone and you can't text or call me, but there are so many other methods of communication. And you didn't try one. So now I'm here, alone, because you couldn't face your own life. Because you wanted to run off to La La Land, to be with a boy who wasn't by your side when you needed him most. I was there. Now I'm here. Now you're there" I felt the tears welling up in my eyes.

"Jess, I don't know what I can say to make this better. You're right, I was being selfish by leaving you alone, but I'm not going to lie and say that I shouldn't be here and that I want to go back. And yeah, you've been by my side at times when he wasn't, but I love him."

"Melody I love you!"

"What?"

"I love you ok? And not in that elementry love-you-as-a-friend kid of way"

"Jess I-"

"No, I know it's stupid because you have a boyfriend, but I thought we had something, while you were here"

"I'm really sorry Jess. I love you so much but as a friend and nothing more" I said.

"Alright, well nice talking to you" she said sarcastically.

"Jess, wait-"
"My one request is that you never talk to me again" and then she hung up.

I didn't know what to do, or think. She loved me? And I rejected her. Wow.

I got up and made my way back to Dani.

"How's Jess" he asked as I sat down next to him.

"She's, um, good" I said swallowing the lump in my throat "Thanks for letting me use your phone"

"Anytime" he replied.

We sat in silence until I couldn't keep it in anymore, and started crying.

"Mel, what's wrong?"

"She hates me. I rejected her. She hates me"

"What?"

"Dani, she loved me, like love, loved me. And I don't feel the same way so I rejected her. She sounded so... broken"

"Well, you are irresistible" he said with a slight smirk.

"Dani! This isn't funny!"I said.

"Sorry. Like you said to me when I broke up with Lili, she's going to find another girl who will be able to give her the love she deserves. She will be bitter and grieving, but will eventually move on" he said.

"Thank you Dani" I said looking over at him.

"Like I said before, anytime" I kissed him on the cheek and got up.

"Come on, it's getting late" I said as he got up.

By the time we got back to the house it was dark out. We went inside and heard laughter coming from the kitchen.

"Hey guys what's up?" Dani said walking into the kitchen.

"Not much. You?" Jack said.

"Oh, this is Melody. I know some of you have met her before"

"We've met" Jack said smirking at me and Dani sent him a glare.

"Relax, I'm just joking" Jack said.

"Whatever, anyways that's Corbyn" he said pointing at a somewhat tall guy with blond hair "That's Jonah" who I recognized from earlier "and you've already ran into Zach before"

"We were just thinking about going out for food, you guys interested?" Corbyn asked.

"I'm down" I said.

"Me too" said Dani.
