Chapter 28

Melody's pov

A few minutes after Dani left Christina came in. When I say came in it was more like came crashing in. She jumped onto the bed and crawled next to me.

"So, how is my best friend doing?" she asked.

"Quite awful, in fact" I replied.

"Besides the obvious, is there anything else going on? I saw Daniel rush out of the room and he seemed upset"

"Well, he should be. He is standing up for Lili. Trying to protect her, just because she told you guys where I was after some negotiating"

"Ugh I know he even let her ride in the car with us on the way to here"

"Are you kidding me?"

"Yeah, and when she wasn't behind them running to the car, he gave your unconscious body to Jonah and ran back in to rescue her"

"I can't believe him! He rescued the girl who helped kidnap me"

"I mean this also can be looked at that Daniel has a big heart" she suggested.

"Yeah a heart that ditched his girlfriend on the beach, protected his ex, saved his ex, and refused to call the cops on someone who is clearly guilty"

"I just think that the central message of all this is to never ditch me on girls' night" she said, making us both laugh.

"God, why are boys so stupid?" I asked her.

"I honestly don't have a clue. But you do know that Daniel loves you"

"I guess, it's hard in moments like these" I said more tears slipping down my cheeks.

"Aww babe" said Christina hugging me.

"I just wish he would see it from my point of view. And realize how wrong he's being"

"Do you want me to go talk to him?" she asked.

"If you want to"

"Ok, I'll be right back"

Christina's pov

I walked out of Melody's room and looked for Daniel.

"Jonah, have you seen Daniel?" I asked.

"Yeah, he went outside he said he needed some air. How is she?"

"Physically she will be ok, but mentally she is a little shaky"

"That sucks" he replied.

"I know. Anyways I'm going to go talk to him, thank you"

I speed walked to the elevator and outside.

I found him sitting on a bench with his head in his hands.

"Daniel, you need to go back in there" I said.

"She doesn't want to see me" he replied with hurt in his voice.

"I know but she needs to. She's hurting, she really is, so you need to go back in there and make it right"

"How?"

"Well for starters you can stop protecting your EX girlfriend"

"It's not like that, she doesn't deserve prison time"

"Yes she does! She kidnapped your girlfriend!"

"But I promised-"

"Nobody cares about what you promised her. Honestly it doesn't matter whether or not you tell the police what happened, because I know that the first chance Melody gets she is going to tell them everything. So you can either man up and tell them yourself where Lili is or they can track her and you will have to have a long uncomfortable conversation with the police. The choice is yours" I concluded.

As soon as I was about to get up and go inside we both heard a faint voice coming from the left.

"Dani?" said Lili whose eyes were red and puffy, her blond hair was in multiple tangles, and her clothes were filthy.

The only emotion that rushed through my veins was anger. I marched over to her and slapped her across the face.

She looked back at me with this expression that read shocked yet understanding.

I wanted to hurt her more, but I restrained myself and simply left with saying.

"That was for hurting my best friend"

Dani's pov

As soon as Christina's hand collided with Lili's cheek I instantly realized how stupid I have been.

Christina did the thing that I should've (obviously I wouldn't have hit her but...).

As Christina stomped back inside I looked at the ground, trying to figure out someway to apologize to Melody.

"Some people have such nerve" Lili finally said.

"Well, you kind of deserved it" I replied.

"You're kidding right? After I practically saved Melody. If anything I deserve a thank you"

"Lili, you put her in danger in the first place! I lied for you! I protected you when I should have been protecting my girlfriend from you!"

"But Dani, don't you see? If you're doing all these things for me it must mean that deep down you still love me"

"You're crazy. I did all those things because deep down I thought you were a good person who was only confused and didn't mean to hurt Melody"

"Dani I am a good person, but I was not confused when I was hurting Melody. I hate her. With every bone in my body" she said.

I looked into her eyes and saw nothing but coldness. That good person I thought she was, was nowhere in sight.

"But, Dani you did promise that we would hang out sometime. So I will see you tomorrow at 2"

"Yeah like that's going to happen" I said sarcastically.

"It better. Because if you think that Melody's mother and I are the only ones who hate her, you are dead wrong. I will also let those people know where Melody is if you tell the police about me. Alright, I've said what I need to say, bye babe" she got up laughing and walked away.

Panic rushed through my system and I knew that I needed to get to Melody as soon as possible.

I ran into the hospital, then the elevator, and finally to her room.

Jack was in there making small talk with her. I gave him a look and he said goodbye and left.

"Daniel I already told you-"

"Melody I know what you told me, but this is important. I'm so sorry. I was being a complete asshole and disregarding what was best for you. I also want you to know that I have no feelings whatsoever towards Lili. I love you more then words can explain. But there is a catch to all this, if we tell the cops about Lili she will send other people who supposedly hate you to come after you. I don't know if we should believe her because of past instances but I thought you should know."

She just sat there looking down at her hands.

"Melody please say something" I pleaded.

"I called you Daniel" she mumbled.

"What?" I asked.

"I called you Daniel! I don't remember the last time I called you Daniel. Why is she doing this to us. People break up! And you're supposed to move on!" She said crying.

I reached out for her but she pulled away.

"No, I don't want to cry. I don't want her to make me cry. I want to be happy. I want to smile" she sobbed "And I want us to be so insanely in love that the rest of the world doesn't matter."

"Mel we will get through this. I know we will"

"Well, so far she's winning and we stand no chance"
