Chapter 35: Listening

Louis was a pretty good listener when I told him about how my dad left.  Even when I had to stop at a few parts and ended up getting choked up, he would be right there for comfort and to wipe my tears away.  Let me tell you, it was really hard to tell that story to him. I rarely tell that story to anyone, mainly Pat and Chloe.  But I felt close enough to him that I could.

“What kills me is that I never learned why he left. That’s why that dream terrified me to death, because I was about to die and he just ran away,” I tell him, choking up a bit at the end.  He wrapped his arm around my shoulder, bringing me closer to him.

“He was in your dream?” he asks. I nod.

“There were these birds screeching in my ears and when I looked up he was right there in front of me. But he wouldn’t tell me why he left, he kept running away, and soon I was about to be dead,” I explain.

“That sounds awful,” he says, rubbing my back in attempt to relax me. It did feel comforting.

“It was, and that’s why I’m terrified Louis,” I turn to face him. He looks over at me.

“I’m completely and utterly scared that we’ll end up like my parents. Don’t get me wrong, I love my parents to pieces. But now it’s just my mom, and I’ll probably never see him again in my life. I—I don’t want you to take off one day, I don’t want you to leave,” He just looks at me and presses his lips together, so I keep blurting this out. It actually felt good to get this off my chest, because it’s right for him to know this.

“I stayed away from relationships all through school, focused on my grades, and I was able to stay optimistic all through the years.  And with you I still am, but if you leave, if—if you take off like my dad did, I couldn’t be.  Relationships are scary to me, and I’m just—scared,” I admit.

“Lola,” he starts, taking one of my hands. “Look when I say this,” I look into his bright blue eyes, waiting to hold on to every word he says.

“I know love and relationships are terrifying and scary. I’m not going to lie, they are.  But I want you to know that I’m not like other guys. And I’m certainly not your dad. I wouldn’t leave without a reason, I wouldn’t leave you period.  I wouldn’t leave you unless you wanted me to. And I would, just for you. Because I care that much about you, I want to love you and give you everything in the world. Because I love you, and I want you to know that I would never, ever leave you, no matter what,”

And I did hold onto every word, because I could tell he meant everyone he said.  Louis was different, he wouldn’t be the one to run off with someone else. He seemed so committed to me, and I didn’t want to let go of him either.

“Is it too early to say I love you?” he asks. I shake my head.

“Nope, because I love you too,” I say. I lean forward and press my lips to his, closing my eyes and letting him take control.  His kisses to me felt sweet and gentle, never trying too hard. I start to move my lips in sync with his as his tongue slips into my mouth.  Slowly, I let the kiss grow stronger.

“I will never,” he breaths between the kiss. “Let you go,”

“Me neither,” I breathe. He pulls back and looks at me, hand on my cheek.

“Because I love you too much,”

“Are you serious?” he looks at me jokingly. I nod, looking back at the screen. If you’re wondering, which I’m supposing you are, I made Louis watch Twilight: New Moon. One of my most favorite movies of all time.

“Yes, this was my favorite movie and still is,” I say proudly.  We were right at the part when Bella and Edward are in Volterra.  Louis was asking so many questions and making fun of it the entire time we watched it.

“Those guys are complete freaks, why would you want a power like that anyways?” he asks, gesturing toward the Volturi. Jane, one of my favorite characters, just used her ‘pain’ power on Edward.

“I could see it come in handy,” I say with a sly smile, focusing on the movie.

“Woah Lola,” I look over at him as he holds his hands up in mock surrender. “I never knew you had a dark side to you,”

“You haven’t found out all my secrets Mr. Tomlinson,” I say, moving closer to him on the couch.  He was no longer complaining about the pain, he barely slept in the day anymore either.  That gave us more time for doing things like watching cliché vampire movies and cuddling.

“So what is the Edward guy in trouble for?” Louis asks for the millionth time.

“Dating a human, obviously,” I point out.  “They’re about to kill him, but Bella will sacrifice herself,”

“Spoiler alert!” he exclaims. I roll my eyes at him with a smile.

“Haven’t you already seen this?” He shrugs.

“Maybe,” he remarks. I look back at the screen and watch as the fight scene unfolds.

“I still can’t believe this is your favorite movie,” he jokes.

“Yeah well, don’t worry. I do have other major favorites that have no vampires whatsoever,” I’m about to say something else when I feel my phone vibrate in my pocket. I take it out and check my messages.  Other than the old missed calls from Chloe, I received a text from an unknown number.

“Who’s it from?” Louis asks. I shrug, unlocking my phone and going to read the message.

Hey Lola, sorry I haven’t checked in on Louis in a while. I’ll try to make it over soon and see how he’s doing.  Is he driving you nuts? Anyways, I can get you out of your flat for a bit if you’d like to join me on a run. Then I can come check in on him. Would you like to? –Liam

“Liam texted me, and I have no idea how I got his number,” I look up at Louis as he tries to look innocent.

“Louis, did you give my number to all the boys?” I ask, already knowing the answer.

“Maybe,” he says with a smile. I sigh and look back at my phone.

“Well Liam has decided to invite me to go on a run, so I think I’ll join him after the movie is over,” Louis groans.

“Why,”

“Because it’d be nice to get out of my flat for a bit,” I answer.

“Are you saying you’re tired of me?” he asks, pouting out his lip, putting his hand over his heart like he’s hurt.

“No, but it’d be nice to go on a run with someone. I haven’t been out on a run in ages, so why not,” I watch the screen as Bella, Jacob, and Edward are in the woods. The final scene, and one of my favorites.

“Fine, but you have to give me something to do,” Louis says.

“Like what? I could put another movie in,” I suggest. Louis gives me a smug smile.

“Or you could give me this,” he cups my chin and brings me closer, planting a kiss on my lips. I kiss him back for a few seconds, but then pull back.

“There, now I need to go change,” I say, getting off of the couch and walking to my bedroom, hearing Louis groan in the background.
