Tomorrow was your match with Rantaro.
Sitting in your assigned desk, you wrote down the notes for the day's math class. Typical addition, multiplication, division—all of it was written neatly on the lined paper. Sitting in the middle of Valt and Shu for the class was always a spectacle to see. To your right, Shu was diligently writing and raising his hand every now and then as he's clearly paying attention. To your left, Valt's snoring with his head bobbing up and down in sleepiness. There's barely anything on his notebook. Seems as though you needed to tutor him later tonight.
Each day you ensured to rip out the two, yes two, feathers growing from behind your ears and put them away securely. It didn't hurt as you anticipated it would, so that's a plus.
The entire three days of waiting for the next round was spent with you and Valt training daily either at home or at school. Daina occasionally joined, but Rantaro completely bailed out on you both. Said something about how awkward it was to spar just to fight on the big stage.
"Valt, our teacher told me to come get you."
You and Valt look over to see Shu standing a little ways behind the stadium. You two had just finished another sparring match against Daina, and you had transformed back to take a small break.
Valt whines as he turned his back to you. "Whaaat? Can't it wait? We're training!"
Shu shook his head. "Sorry, but she tells me she wants to talk to you about your sleeping habits during class." This was something coming to bite Valt sooner or later, you're just surprised it took this long.
Valt pouts and turns to you. "[First name], wait here! I'll be back in a jiffy!"
"It's not like I can launch myself into battle," you joke as Valt chuckles before running off. Shu gives you an apologetic glance.
"Sorry to interrupt your training session," he says and began to turn around. "Anyway, I've got stuff to do. I'll leave you both to it."
As Shu closes the doors to the rooftop, he left you and Daina alone. Without Valt, there was barely anything for you to do, and it's not like you can leave. You can only hope the scolding he'll get is a short one. You sigh and sunk onto the bench tucked away under the only roof up here. Daina picks up Deathscyther from the stadium, stares at it, and remains silent. From the edges of your vision, you eyed him down.
Recently, Daina had been acting strangely.
He was generous enough to spar with you and Valt, however, he was quieter than usual these days. The morning after your quick conversation about Wakiya, you noticed he was distant and a bit sluggish. You think he was sleepy from how often he was dazed and staring off into the distance. Each battle afterward was met with Daina looking at Deathscyther longingly and requested another fight.
Today, he was acting a little worse for wear. Something's clearly on his mind. As he settles himself beside you, you can't help but notice how tightly he was holding Deathscyther.
