The sunlight was blinding my eyes. I slowly open my eye sockets. I closed them back because of the bright light. After a few minutes, I attempted to open them again. I adjusted the bright light. I blinked a couple of times. I layed there for another 15 minutes, debating whether I wanted to sleep in or stay up. As much as I want to sleep with my wonderful wife, my bed, I needed to stay up.
I forced myself to sit up. I looked around and saw something that almost made me scream. Almost. Then I take a breather and realised it was just Papyrus sitting on chair, sleeping.
Wait... What?
I stood up and walked towards him. I grabbed his shoulder and shook him softly.
"Hey Boss... Wake up.. What are you doing here?" I whispered.
He slowly open his eye sockets, "S-sans?"
"Yea, Boss?" I replied.
He stared at me for a couple seconds. Suddenly, he pulled me into a tight hug. I was surprised.
"B-boss?" I stuttered.
This.... Was weird. I don't know what to do.
"Shut the fuck up. Let me have this moment to myself," he buried his head into my shoulder.
I was uncertain of where my hand should be placed. I can't help but to caressed his head. His body tense for a moment, but then immediately relaxed afterwards.
His hold the back of my shirt tightly. He nuzzled further into my shoulder, trying to find comfort.
"What's wrong Boss?" I asked.
It took him a while to reply, "Nothing's wrong. Nothing."
I tried to pulled back but he won't let me go.
"Give me.. A few more minutes. Please," He said.
The word 'please' surprised me. Papyrus wasn't the type to beg for something. He demands it. There's something that had happened to him when I was asleep.
I obliged and waited for him to be done with it. Throughout the moment, his body shakes and his breathing was uneven. I was worried and wanted to ask him what really had happened, but I know prying it won't help. He have to be open up towards me.
He finally pulled back and his face was... A lot paler than usual. There was dark circles around his eyes.
"Hey... Boss. We should visit Alphys. You look... Unwell," I suggested.
"It's okay. I'm alright," He denied.
"But Bos-"
"I'M OKAY!"
I flinched.
"Just... Leave me by myself okay? I can handle it on my own," he said softly.
He stood up and walked towards the door. Without looking at me, he said, "From now on, you'll be staying at home. You will not be working for the Royal Guards anymore."
I was shocked. The Papyrus that I used to know, would beat the shit out of me, if I don't work hard. What's going on?
However, I didn't protest about it at all. I know he needed space. Maybe, he will change his mind. I pushed away all of my thoughts and decided to take a warm shower to clear up my messy mind.
After showering, I wore my white shirt and black shorts. I walked down the staircase and saw Papyrus sitting on the couch, watching T.V. A plate of waffles was sitting on the table.
"Just eat. I'm not hungry so eat it without me," he said, not taking his eyes off of the screen.
I gave him an affirmative sound and eat the waffles. For some reason, the waffles was crunchier than usual. Not in a good way. It almost as if there was bits in it. I looked at the waffles and realised there were egg shells in it. This wasn't like Papyrus. He wanted his cooking to be perfection. He would definitely freak out if he messed up the tinniest.
I glanced at Papyrus. He had a poor sitting posture. He wasn't even watching the T.V, he was just staring it.
I can't take this anymore.
I stood up and walked towards him. I grabbed his arm.
"What the fuck Sans?!"
"Tell me what's going on with you!"
"I told you there's nothing going o-"
"STOP LYING!" I shouted.
He sat there, frozen.
"If there's nothing going on, you won't be sleeping in my room, looking pale and having dark circles. If there's nothing going on, you won't be hugging me. If there's nothing really going, your cooking and posture would had been normal. I am no expert in reading people's mind, but I do know that something is indeed wrong when I sense one," I ventured.
"Sans, I am giving you a chance to-"
I pulled him closer and looked deeply in his eye sockets.
"No, I'm not going to go anywhere. I'm staying here. You can beat me, insult me, kick me out of here but I would never, ever give up on you until you tell me what is going on in your head. I know we both are not close, but you still a brother to me no matter what. This time, I would be here with you. I am not going to do the same mistake and leave you on your own, in that cell of yours. We are a family now. Papyrus, let me be in your life again."
His pupils shifted left and right but he still maintain his eye contact.
"I..."
He pulled me into a hug that I fell down onto the couch. He was breathing heavily.
"I was afraid," he said shakily.
"Afraid?"
"I saw you died in my dreams. I woke up and check on you. You were sleeping peacefully and I was relief that you were still alive. However, I still couldn't feel at ease, so I called up Captain Rogers and told him you're fired. I did this because you will not be able to go out anymore so that your death could be avoided. Afterwards, I stayed in your room for the rest of the night, watching over you."
He continued, "I was worried and afraid that anything had happened to you. The dream felt...so real."
He..cared about me. My heart broke into pieces. Poor thing. I hugged him tightly, making sure he felt that he wasn't alone. It must be hard for him, trying to act all tough yet he was such a petrified child in heart.
"How did I died?" I asked.
"You... Got a wound on your stomach. The caused of it was a human. I was crying hysterically. The conversation of both you and I had, was inaudible. You were in pain and you kept holding a... I think it was a military tag. Eventually, I heard you made an joke then you turned into.. Dust. It felt... So real, I could feel everything, especially the dust passing by me," he replied.
I gulped. He does remember... But in his dreams. Wait... If he remembers it... I can asked what happened after that! Then I will know what was the caused of the player resetting the game.
"Papyrus, what had happened afterwards?"
"Nothing. Everything when black and I woke up from there," he explained.
Dammit. I was closed. Well aside from that... I am deadly worried for Papyrus. What am I going to say? That it was only a dream? That it was not going to happen?
I rubbed his back in circles.
"I'm not going to die. You and I are going to live a long life. I will guarantee this time. I will protect us no matter what. I won't die. I promise," I said soothingly.
He relaxed and layed on me. His breathing was even now and it was at a normal pace. In no time, he fell asleep because of his exhaustion.
I know I can't keep that promise. I know I will die, but I can't help telling lies to him. I don't want him to think that there was no hope left in life, because he had already think that way when he was younger. I'm going to try my best... To protect us. I know we will make it. We have to.
