"Sans, wake up brother!" Papyrus called.
Sans felt like his body was crushed. He had difficulty breathing. Then he took a moment to take few deep breaths and slowly open his eyes. Sans immediately closes them back as the light was too bright. He open them again and tried to adjust the surroundings.
"Here, let me help," Papyrus said.
Papyrus took Sans hand to pull him so that Sans would sit up on his bed. Sans finally had his eyes properly opened and he took a good look around him. Everything here had changed. His room was no longer dull. There was no holes in his walls from all those punching and kicking.
Then he turned towards Papyrus. He was fascinated on how Papyrus face changed as well, drastically. No razor sharp teeth, rounded shaped eye sockets and a friendly face overall. Sans put his hands on his younger brother's face to inspect further.
"You're real... You're not a glitch. It worked... It worked Papyrus!" Sans exclaimed.
"What did worked, brother?" Papyrus asked.
His head tilted in confusion. Sans pupils shrink.
"No no no no no, you don't remember Papyrus?" Sans cried, "Something anything!"
Papyrus just frown, "I'm sorry brother, I don't have what you are looking for."
Sans just looked down, trying to hold back. He looked back up to Papyrus with a smile, "Oh it's alright, I think it was my bad. It was a just dream."
Sans soul ache for saying that but what can he really do? Even if his brother didn't remember, as long as he is here and alive, Sans should still be happy but he wasn't. Something about the journey really impacted him and bonded him with his -used to- abusive brother. Not only that, all his friends who sacrifice their lives for the war, was that just for nothing?
"I see. I've got train with Undyne now. I think you should stay home to rest," Papyrus said.
"Okay," Sans whispered.
Papyrus left the room with a goodbye. Sans was just sitting there, taking everything in. Then he decided to see the world for himself and see what else had changed. He walked out of his room and saw the living room wall along the staircase were filled with pictures of him and his brother. Portrait after portrait. Group pictures of his brother, him and their friends. Then something caught Sans eye.
He came closer and took it off the wall. It was him, his brother and Dr Gaster. Smiling altogether. This makes Sans burst out of tears. What Dr. Gaster did was a heroic act but Sans didn't believe it. Sans secretly didn't believe Metatton but after what he had seen, the portrait of the three of them, he knew he was wrong for not having faith in his own father.
He put it back and gave out a small smile, "Its okay Dad. We are back to normal."
The rest of the house looked the same with a few minor changes. Sans decided to just went out of his home to discover the new world he was desperately wanting to see.
When he went out, the first thing he saw was the sky. It was bright baby blue. It wasn't red and dark. The trees were filled with leaves and the atmosphere here was way lighter than the previous world. Sans even put his guard down since everything here seems more brighter and no monster would want to kill him.
He went to the town which to his surprise were filled with happy little monsters playing tag, mothers gossiping with each other, music playing throughout the whole place, lights were hung to make the place more cheerful and the best of all, all the monsters were laughing and smiling. Everyone was just so... Friendly with each other.
Sans was awestruck and decided to sit on a bench and watch the whole town. It may seemed boring, but when your life is just filled with chaos and anger, you will be surprise to find peace the best gift to ever received.
"S-sans?" A stuttering female voice called him out.
"Alphys?" Sans was surprised, "What are you doing here?"
"I-i'm here to p-pick up some books from the l-library. W-what about you? Y-you were always at the h-hotdog stand or a-at G-grillby's or at the s-sentry. I-its pretty odd to s-see you here," she smiled.
Sans rubbed his neck, "I just don't feel like doing any of that ya know? I think I just want to rest here for a little bit."
This was the monster that took her own life because of her hallucination of her dying lover. Sans was definitely glad to met her again. Her facial expression when she was found dead was enough to traumatized Sans. Blood shot eyes, wide open and her mouth was hanging out. He still remembered how painful it was to lose all his 3 friends at one day.
Thus, he decided to chit chat with Alphys to appreciate that she is alive now.
------
"Sans?"
Sans looked to his left, "Oh hi Papyrus, how was training?"
"It was okay... Are you talking to Alphys?" Papyrus looked confused.
"H-hi Papyrus," Alphys greet.
"Yea, its really great talking to her," Sans smiled.
When Sans was smiling, it was very contagious to Papyrus. His brother rarely smiled and some times even if he does, it was a fake one, like this morning. However, this felt genuine, which makes him want to smile as well.
"O-oh dear! I h-have to go, or else M-metatton is going to k-kill me!" Alphys wailed.
She said goodbye before quickly rushes off. Both Sans and Papyrus chuckled at her clumsiness. They both walked back to their home till Papyrus spoke,
"Do you want to visit the cave with stars brother?"
"Heh, sure. Why not am I right?"
------
"It's still looks so beautiful," Papyrus said.
Sans simply hummed in response. He was still pretty bummed out with Papyrus forgetting the journey but now, he felt like he could move on to live a better life than before.
"Brother, I have a surprise for you!" Papyrus exclaimed.
"What is it?" Sans asked.
"Here!"
Papyrus pulled out a black box. Sans took the box and open it up. His expression turned from excited to just confused.
"Its... A military tag and it's the same before... Why is it the same? I thought you didn't remembe-" Sans looked at Papyrus.
Sans took 5 seconds to realised it.
"You remember!" Sans pulled Papyrus for a hug, "You are so mean! I almost cried when you didn't remember!"
"You always pranked me Sans. Now its my turn," Papyrus chuckled.
"So you fake it from morning?"
"Yes. Isn't my acting marvelous, Sans?"
Sans could just smile, "Yes it is Papyrus."
As much as he was mad at Papyrus, he was more overwhelmed with the happiness that his brother remembered.
"Oh! I almost forgot, I have a special guest! Look behind you!"
Sans looked behind him and there was Frisk smiling.
"Kid!" Sans shouted.
He hugged Frisk so tight, she could almost die from running out of air. He let go of Frisk and smile widely. Then tears slowly ran down
Sans's cheeks. Frisk and Papyrus knew that this was emotional for Sans. He has been so stressful for making all the decision for the rest of them and tried to keep it together. They pulled him for a group hug to comfort him which Sans gladly accepts it. After a few minutes, Papyrus asked,"Anyone want spaghetti?"
All of them laughed together. They went back to the skeletons's home to celebrate by eating Papyrus's spaghetti.
