Maria's POV

Instead of finding Matt, I decided to leave. I was on the verge of being drunk, and when I was drunk I can get easily angered. Being around annoying humans wasn't really a good idea.

I walked back to the boarding house, the bottle was now empty.

Once I got inside, I was surprised to see Elena sitting on the couch. Stefan was no where in sight.

"Maria." She greets me with a tight lipped smile. "Eleanor." I reply, purposely pronouncing her name wrong, because it's quite fun to tease people. She only glared at me before rolling her eyes lightly and looking away.

"You know we should really try to like each other. I mean aren't you like soulmates with my brother? I see you being in the family for a long time." I suddenly speak as I let myself fall back again the opposite couch. A look of hope yet curiosity flashes through her eyes. "Really?" She asks, now interested in the conversation.

"Ummmmmmm.... no." I say with a small laugh and Stefan walks around the corner, stopping Elena from saying the snarky remark I knew she was thinking of.

"Where were you?" He asks, and I shrug, "Went to some party."

"You reek of alcohol." Is all he mutters as he goes to sit beside Elena, "Shocker." I hear Elena mutter, "What the hell is that supposed to mean?" I ask, sitting up to lean on my knees so I can get a better look at her. While I'm intoxicated I shouldn't be around humans.

She gulps but doesn't turn away, and Stefan puts a protective arm on her thigh. I roll my eyes and lean back against the couch.

"Don't start Maria." Stefan growls, "Calm down Stefan. You know I won't do anything." I sigh, and Stefan just looks back at Elena who looked more than confused at the situation.

"Unlike you.." I mumble and Stefan groans, "You're gonna bring that up?" He asks and I shrug, "Bring what up?" Elena buds in.

Stefan makes some weird face motion, but I ignore him and look straight at Elena. "When we were human, Stefan beat up my best friend. For no reason."

"You were only fifteen years old, he was being a dick." Stefan muttered, leaning back against the couch. "No- he wasn't. He simply kissed me and Stefan freaked. Plus I didn't say anything to you or Damon when both of you were being lovey with Katherine, when you were only 17." I snap, I wasn't really phased by the whole 'Stefan beating up my friend thing', I just enjoyed bitter arguments.

Elena made some weird quiet noise when I said Katherine's name, which only caused me to roll my eyes.

"I think I'm going to head to bed. Please don't kill me in my sleep." I mumble, looking straight at Elena.

The next day was just as boring, so I decided to enroll myself in high school. I wasn't quite sure how long I'd be staying in Mystic Falls, but I knew I didn't want to leave just yet.

Walking by the cheerleading team, I heard whispers, but I ignored them, I really wasn't in the mood for any drama today.

It was easy enough, and just before lunch I got to head to my first class. History.

Since I didn't know anybody, I sat by a kid who smelled like weed, his headphones were blasted which caused me to also hear them, but for some reason he looked oddly familiar.

I tapped his shoulder and he hesitated before turning to me, "What?" He asked, his voice harsh.

I squinted my eyes at him, "I wouldn't be rude. Anyway- I'm Maria." I say, and his eyes roam my body, before he makes eye contact with me again.

"I'm Jeremy."

Oh, Elena's little brother, how fun.

"So you're the little brother Elena was talking about." I say, having a good look at him, he really didn't look like Elena at all. Although their eyes were kinda the same. "Uh you know Elena?" He asks, his voice full of confusion.

"Unfortunately. She's dating my brother." I tell him, waiting to see his reaction. He raises his eyebrows, "I didn't know Stefan had a sister."

I nod at his words, "Yeah it's a long story. Awhile ago I moved out and roamed around the world with a friend, they moved back here and I guess I decided to settle down for a bit." I tell him, and he looks even more surprised.

"You're parents let you travel around the world.. at 16.. while not doing school?" He asks, amazement in his voice. "Well my parents are dead and my brothers didn't care so.."

He doesn't say anything, he just shuts his mouth and it goes quiet for a few seconds. "I'm sorry. I understand- my parents are dead too." He mutters, his voice quiet.

"Really?" I ask, genuinely shocked. While Katherine was finding things out about Elena, she never mentioned her parents being dead.

"Yeah. Anyway, how long you here for?" He asks, and I look towards the front of the room, "I'm not sure. My friend- she kinda ditched me here, so now it's up to me."

He nods, opening his mouth to say something but the teacher interrupts.

"Maybe we could leave and travel together." He whispers and I grin, taking it as a joke, "Yeah. Maybe."

---

I never went to high school, so I was more than amazed with everything going on. So amazed that after school I decided to try out for the cheerleading team.

"Name?" A blonde girl asked, her voice having a rude tone to it. "Maria." She finally looked up at me, and I realized who she was.

"You look familiar. Do I know you from somewhere?" She asked, and I shrug, "Katherine turned you and I helped, maybe that will jog your memory?" I say and she scrunches her face up.

"What are you doing here- I thought Katherine left town." Caroline muttered, "We ain't attached at the hip." Is all I say, before walking away from her.

"Why are you here?" She asks as she follows me towards the field, "Aren't you friends with Elena also? Shouldn't you know why?" I ask, and she squints, "Elena and I aren't very close."

"I have family here." I mutter, but of course her being a vampire, she heard me loud and clear. "Oh my god. You're the sister- Stefan mentioned something a day ago when we were training, you were with Katherine."

I roll my eyes, "Yes. Now can I try out for the cheerleading team?" I ask, annoyed. Caroline looks back at the other girls, "You're not like Katherine. She was a bitch, scary and mean. You're just like Stefan and Damon." She says more to herself than to me, "Okay?" I mumble, not sure what else to say.

"Fine you can try out. But this is my team, and if you make it, you listen to my rules."

I laugh at her, before walking away.
