Prom Night
(Prologue)

Ember crouched down, putting the last finishing touches on Dragon's costume. Luna's parents had told him to just keep him for the extra week until prom.

"Are you going to keep messing with the puppy, or get in the shower for yourself?" He looked up to see his grandmother in his doorway, shaking her head at him.

Dragon wagged his tail and raced out of the room, the accessories of his costume falling back.

Ember turned around, taking steps to his bathroom and shutting the door before beginning to get ready for a shower.

Luna walked the small distance across the hall to her parents' hotel room. Her hands rested in the pockets of her dress and her head was covered by her wig, which had been styled.

She knocked on the door twice, waiting for her mother to answer, knowing that her father had went off to get food.

The door slowly opened to reveal her mom and she smiled, looking at the woman's attempt to keep back all of her happiness.

"Look at you," she said to Luna, grabbing her by the shoulders and slowly running her hands down her arms, until just their hands were holding.

"I don't know if your father will let you go now," Kyla, a friend of her parents, who had accompanied them, said.

Kyla was closer to Luna's age, her mom having become friends with her since Kyla was a waitress at her mom's favorite restaurant.

Luna's mom looked over at her daughter, too, opening her mouth to speak, "I was thinking the same."

Luna frowned, hiding her hands back in the pockets of the dress. "I don't care, I'm at least going to get Dragon," she said, laughing as Kyla did too.

"Hello, hello," all three girls looked up to see Luna's father holding two bags of food from fast food restaurants.

Luna laughed a little. "You do know that I can't eat that, right?" She asked, checking with her dad. He shrugged at her.

"Some days, you have to break the rules," he said, walking past Luna's mother and placing the bags of food on the table. "Besides, they're for after the prom."

Luna raised her eyebrows, looking over at her mom for a split second. "I was told that I could spend the night with Ember afterwards," she said, confusion racking her brain, and the little amount of sleep she had gotten the night before didn't help.

Her father frowned, looking at his daughter. "Have you seen what you look like?" He asked, walking closer and smiling at Luna. "I'm not allowing my daughter to spend the night with a boy that's seen her like this all night."

"Even if he's my best friend?" Luna asked, forming a small pout.

"Even if he's your best friend," her dad concluded, right before he walked into the room, grabbing his keys. "We have to go."

Luna looked at Kyla with her small pout, causing the girl to laugh as they followed Luna's parents into the elevator.

Luna stayed quiet, only speaking when she felt her phone vibrate and pulled it out to check it.

"Ember says that Emerald will be at the house," Luna informed everyone before adding, "beware."

Ember didn't pull on his suit jacket, finding it already hot in the house with just the shirt and vest on.

He walked to his dresser, picking up the corsage his grandmother had bought while he was at school. He brought it to the kitchen so that he wouldn't forget it, and laughed when Dragon ran to him.
