(Chapter Six)
The last week before Christmas vacation, Elara was home, sick, which meant Ember had to stay home, and couldn't get anything at school done. Even though he didn't care.
Elara got off of her bed, the mirror on her closet door showing her that her red, curly hair was a mess. She just shrugged and walked out of her room, Dragon following her.
Ember and Emerald stood in the kitchen, Emerald cooking breakfast and Ember talking about something that was on his phone. Elara peeked around the corner just as they both laughed.
She looked at Dragon, putting her finger to her lips in a motion to shush him. His tail wagged in response.
Emerald looked at Ember, pointing to Elara, who was still in their view, and they both held back from laughing.
Elara peeked her head around again, jerking it back when she saw that they were looking her way. She checked again after a couple of seconds, and started moving when she saw that they were looking the other way.
Emerald watched her out of the corner of her eyes, and Ember continued talking, acting like he'd never seen her.
Dragon followed Elara, his claws making the slightest sound against the hardwood floor.
Elara guided them to the living room, pulling the footrest to one of Emerald's chairs to the open window that was in a wall between the kitchen and living room. She stepped on it, checking to see if Ember was in the kitchen, and frowned when she didn't see him.
"Got you," Ember said, pulling her off of the stool, causing her to scream before she started laughing. He kissed her cheek and put her down. "Ari's coming over, if you go get dressed, she may take you somewhere."
Elara looked at her father, putting her hand up to her face and stroking her imaginary beard. "That can be arranged," she said before running off towards her bedroom.
Ember walked back around to the kitchen, leaning against the counter when Emerald told him to stay out of her way.
"Where is Ariel taking her anyway?" Emerald asked as Ember got the plates down from the cabinet and brought them to the table. He shrugged, looking at Emerald.
"All that I know is that she said she has a surprise," Ember said, and Emerald nodded, looking up after a moment.
Ember's phone vibrated on the counter and Emerald turned to it, getting it and checking the text. "Mom says that she's coming tomorrow," Emerald put down the phone as Ember frowned and she smiled at him. "Whether you like it or not, it'll happen."
Ember didn't mind it, he was just scared that she would start treating Elara how she treated him. He didn't think that she would, but he still worried.
Elara ran into the room, her hair still a mess and Emerald laughed. Elara looked at the table at the plates before looking at Emerald.
"Aunt Em, will you braid my hair?" She asked, knowing that Emerald could do it any way she wanted her to. She also was one of the only people that didn't hurt her when she brushed it.
"Let's eat first, then I will, okay?" Emerald said, and Elara nodded, pulling a chair out and climbing into it. Ember grabbed her plat, first, since the food was done and fixed it before placing it down in front of Elara.
Elara watched as they both fixed their own plates before sitting down at the table with her. They both began eating while Elara looked at the fourth, empty, chair that was at the table with them.
But after a moment, she snapped back to reality and began eating.
A knock sounded at the door as Elara sat in the floor of the living room, between Emerald's legs as she braided her hair.
