She walks up the sidewalk

Looks over her shoulder

To her left and to her right

Through the detectors

The metal guards protecting her school

Nobody talks about it

But everybody knows

Every time you turn on the news there's a new story

School shooting

Massive casualties

Making hearts race and palms sweat

School was her haven

But now she dreads it

Haven turned hell by the fear of people just like her

People she walks by in the halls

She passes kids

All with clear bags

Marks of the fear sweeping the world

Birthmarks of the insecurity they all feel

Teachers grasping protection

Their curtain to hide behind, yet matching their oppressors

Fear, dripping through the cracks

One more misstep and the water will come crashing down

Everything is tense

Suddenly she hears a shot over the ringing in her ears

And another

Screams

And the floodgates open

Fear runs rampant with the throngs of children running for their lives

In what used to be their haven
