They call us the "Great American Melting Pot"
Millions of cultures and ethnicities compiled into one giant stew that we call America
But through all the stirring people are losing the traits that tie us all together
Self worth and pride and empathy and generosity and respect
We draw lines between culture
See the skin before the eyes
We decide things based on what we see first, the cover of someone's face
If every personality was a different color of skin, we would see the color before the contents
Yet that outside makes us forget that there's something much more valuable inside
In a safe, we store good things, but the outside has cold eyes and is unforgiving
Borders are becoming unbreachable and uncrossable barriers
Making us lose the spared bit of compassion we have stored in the back of our hearts
Unity is the missing trait, the piece we look for and we try to fill the hole but nothing ever fits perfectly
So instead of a melting pot let us be a body
Every bone different
Every nail and piece of skin
But of the same DNA
Separated not by our type but by our talents
A body working with and for each other as opposed to against
Never the same once one part is removed or broken
Beauty found in a different part of every piece
And true unity, the conquering trait
A place we can all be proud of, where we all work
And we are all one
