On May 31st, 2003
A baby girl was born
And her parents smiled at her and remarked upon her beauty and spunk
And she grinned back at them with innocent blue eyes
And she was safe
On May 31st, 2009
A little girl turned six
And she wore a party hat and smiled at herself in the mirror
And thought "Don't I look beautiful"
And the mirror repeated it back to her because it could see in her strong blue eyes that she meant it
And she was happy
On May 31st, 2013
A sweet girl turned ten
And she looked at herself in the mirror and said "I am loved"
But the mirror just told her "Then why did nobody show up to your party?"
And she turned her ashamed eyes downward
And she was unsure
On May 31st, 2016
A teenage girl turned thirteen
And she looked at herself in the mirror and said "I am excited"
But the mirror merely replied "For what? Another year of a life you want to take every day"
And she was afraid
On May 31st, 2019
A young woman turned sixteen
And she looked at herself in the mirror and said "I am beautiful"
But the mirror responded "Then why did he choose her?"
And she was sad
On May 31st, 2021
A grown woman turned eighteen
And she looked at herself in the mirror and said "I am enough"
The mirror retorted "If you were, they would love you even when you mess up"
And she realized that the mirror is a liar
