For my 14th birthday my parents got me the NerveGear. They knew I was looking forward to Sword Art Online. It was all my friend Tania talked about. But unfortunately she was unable to afford it; I would have to play alone.

But I knew there was a chance I might not get the game. There was only 10,000 copies being sold, and there was a high demand for them. My father guaranteed that I would get one. He was one of the game developers.

But was it true?

---

My parents actually got it for me. I knew they wouldn't let me down. The whole day before the launch I was nervous. I had been chosen to beta test but only got to the 9th floor in a couple of months.

I picked away at my food, catching glances at my NerveGear in my bedroom. My little sister snapped at me.

"Sis! Earth to Crys!"

I shook my head, my family coming into view. My parents looked at me thoughtfully.

"Aren't you gonna eat?"my mom asked.

"I don't know. I'm just...to excited to,"I sighed.

"Crystal,"my dad said, cleaning off his plate,"I don't want you too caught up in that game. I don't want it to be your drug."

I shook my head."It won't be Father."

"Well, the game is in thirty minutes. Might wanna get in the car, Kylie."

My sister hugged me. They waved goodbye. I took a bite of chicken and walked into my room.

11:56. My NerveGear glistened in the sunlight. Everything was in place. My pillow, computers, and anything in between.

11:57. I sat down on the bed. There was a quick announcement through the intercom.

"Sword Art Online, or SAO, is starting in a few minutes! People all over have been waiting for this moment. 10,000 copies were sold in only a few minutes last month. This RPGMMO is a smash hit! Players remember, if you see any bugs or glitches, please notify a game developer via through the menu screen. Good luck!"

11:59. I slipped on my NerveGear and lied down in bed.

Deep breathes Crys, I thought. Deep breathes.

"The game starts in 3...2...1."
